(November 19, 2004) Film festival pays tribute to actor
by Teresa C. Brown
The California Independent Film Festival will honor actor Tony Curtis with a lifetime achievement award in a two-day celebration held Dec. 1 and 2.
The event is part of the annual film festival, which was held the weekend of Nov. 5. The tribute portion of the festival was postponed because Curtis was ill that weekend.
The event begins with a special screening of "Some Like It Hot," a film Curtis starred in with Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, at the Vine Cinema, 1722 First St. in Livermore
In addition to the screening, Curtis will judge a Marilyn Monroe look-alike contest and participate in a question-and-answer session with audience members.
The following evening, Curtis will be guest of honor at a dinner held at Goal Line Productions in Pleasanton. Hosted by comedian Marty Ingles, the dinner will feature the showing of a video montage of Curtis' career, with appearances by Michael Callan, Gloria DeHaven, Sue Ann Langdon and Colleen Miller.
An Academy Award nominee, Curtis has appeared in many acclaimed films, including "The Defiant Ones," "Spartacus" and "Sweet Smell of Success."
This year, the California Independent Film Festival entertained more than 2,000 film-goers with 78 films screened at six Livermore wineries. The four-day fest concluded with the festival's Slate Awards, which recognized filmmakers for achievement and merit.
2004 top Slate Award winners are:
¥ Best Picture: "The Wild Guys"
¥ Best Actor: Julian Sands, "Easy Six"
¥ Best Actress: Isabel Sanford, "Click Three Times"
¥ Best Short: "Day of Independence"
The festival, which attracted filmmakers from as far as Japan, also featured Bay Area films.
