Crook banking on heisted computer

A Wells Fargo Bank customer stopped to make a deposit Oct. 13, while a quick-acting crook made a property withdrawal, getting away with a $1,775 held-hand computer.

Police reported that the victim had taken his Compaq Ipaq hand-held computer into the bank at 4900 Hopyard Road about 12:30 p.m. and placed it on a counter while he filled out a deposit slip.

The victim completed his transaction and left the bank, police said. Within 10 minutes after leaving, the victim recalled that he left his $550 computer and called the bank. A bank employee searched the area, but could not find the computer, police said. The victim returned to the bank to search, but also did not find his computer.

The 8-inch-by-6-inch, silver computer had a keyboard and was in a black case. The victim told police about $1,200 in software was loaded on the computer, which he used for his landscaping business.

The case was forwarded to investigations. Dog escapes burglars

An out-of-town houseguest almost lost her dog during an Oct. 11 burglary that cost the resident $464 in property.

The victim told police she was visiting her son, who lives off of Owens Drive, and had brought her dog, a chow chow/Great Dane/Labrador retriever mix, with her. The victim left her son's home about 4 p.m. and returned about 9:30 p.m. Upon return, she discovered that both the front door and the door to the garage were open and her dog was gone, police said.

About 11 p.m., the victim heard her dog scratching at the front door. Although her dog had returned, the crook got away with property, including several DVDs and a cell telephone. Waiting to be claimed
