Football league games begin
(October 01, 2004) Foothill, Amador tied at 3-0
by Heidi Massie
After three weeks of non-league football games, the Amador and Foothill varsity football teams are 3-0, even after facing some tough out-of-town opposition. Tonight the teams face their first East Bay Athletic League opponents, both at home.
Foothill faces off against California (1-2) and Amador hosts Granada (2-1). Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley are also undefeated in their non-league games, so the league schedule should prove challenging for all teams. EBAL football is considered by many to be the best in the North Coast Section, and as the next few weeks' games are played, fans will have an opportunity to see some exciting high school football.
Foothill head coach Matt Sweeney knew last week's game against Skyline would be tough, but the Falcons used their usual ball-control offensive to roll to a 28-21 Homecoming victory. A corner-of-the-end-zone touchdown pass by quarterback Brandon Crawford to Kendal Shomura answered a Skyline score early in the first quarter. Crawford passed to running back Willie Keck for a score in the second, and Foothill opened its lead with a touchdown pass to Neima Khaila in the third. Skyline got within reach of tying the game with 59 seconds left to play, but the Foothill defense held, as Cameron Stewart intercepted a Skyline pass at the Foothill 22-yard line.
Amador's varsity squad cruised to a 30-6 win over Irvington last week, despite a number of penalties throughout the game. The defense held Irvington's offense to 193 total yards, and included a fumble recovery by Vince Bartholdi. Quarterback Brett Zollman completed six of eight passes for a total of 229 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Cory Guillory (3-150-2 TDs) and Nate Young (3-82-1 TD). Stephen Gatehouse contributed a touchdown as well, breaking two tackles on a seven-yard scoring run.
JV football
The Amador and Foothill varsity programs look strong again this year, thanks in part to their excellent junior varsity programs. Both junior varsity squads made it through the non-league schedule at 3-0, and look like they will have their usual exciting seasons.
Frosh football
The freshman Dons shut out Irvington 28-0 on Sept. 23. Brandon Rhodes picked off a pass at the 49-yard line and ran the distance for a touchdown giving the Dons a 28-0 lead in the first half. Key tackles by Ronnie and Jordan Buckley, Joe Detweiler, Alex Ham, Steve Tamayo, Zach Persin and Chris Decar kept Irvington scoreless.
Girls Tennis
Amador's varsity tennis squad played hard but fell to San Ramon 0-9 last Thursday. The bright spot of the day was the spirited play of the No. 3 doubles team of juniors Becca Carr and Allison Kerrigan. The girls walked away with the first set 6-2, and hung tough despite losses in the next two sets, 4-6 and 3-6.
The Lady Falcons team won its match against San Ramon Valley on Tuesday, 6-3. Leading the singles players were Kerri Kummer, Lauren Guerdat, Megan Kummer and Teagan Benson. Doubles leaders for Foothill were Stephanie Wang and Danielle Ong.
Girls Golf
Going to into the rivalry golf match Tuesday, Amador and Foothill lady golfers were tied with 4-1 records in the EBAL. After a close competition, Amador came out on top, beating Foothill 230-243. Amador's Micalann Cowen led the way shooting a 5-over-par 36, followed closely by Foothill's Kim Tilton with a 43. Amador's Lauren Oh, Lauren Russman and Arielle Chong, and Foothill's Stephanie Galbraith, each shot a 47.
Boys Water Polo
The young Foothill boys water polo team faced an experienced Monte Vista team Tuesday, losing 18-5. Leading Foothill's scorers were Kyle Kosloski and Dom Covello, each with two goals, and Justin Tiefenthaler with one.
