Dons runners finish in top five at Cowchip Classic Dons runners finish in top five at Cowchip Classic (September 24, 2004)

Foothill's Ashley Stratman takes first

by Heidi Massie

Amador's cross country team proved it's a team to watch this season, as the boys and girls varsity finished third and fourth respectively at the Cowchip Classic in Novato last Saturday. Seasoned veterans Kendall Nemeth, Liz Wolf, Danielle Gwin, Ben DeLand, Will Tagg, Yakov Brenshteyn and Ray Park, as well as rookies Cory MacDonald, Caroline Lowry, Ariel Wang, Sebastian Trask and Tim Riddle, turned in solid times for the Dons.

Nemeth finished fourth, out of 137 runners in the girls varsity division, while DeLand and Tagg finishing fourth and 16th respectively, out of 159 runners in the boys varsity division.

Foothill sophomore Ashley Stratman finished first in the girls varsity division with a time of 18:47 in a 3-mile run. The boys varsity team finished in seventh place with Gordie Throne taking 14th with a time of 16:48.
Girls Golf

Foothill's Lady Falcons golf team suffered its first loss Tuesday to Monte Vista, 224-250, at Castlewood. Foothill's leaders were Kim Tilton, Caitlin Keane and Stephanie Galbraith, each with 48 (par 37). Foothill's record now stands at 3-1 in the league.
Girls Volleyball

Though Amador's varsity volleyball team lost the first two games in a match with James Logan last week, the Lady Dons (8-5) came back to sweep the last three and win the match.

In game three, Sophia Dunworth served five points in a row with an ace. With a kill by Morgan Anderson, and blocks by Tess Gellerman and Melissa Larson, Amador gained the lead to win 25-17. Also contributing to the win was Lindsay Fogarty with six kills, eight blocks, Aricka Rediger with five kills, five digs, and Katie Cleland with nine digs.
JV Football

For the second week in a row, Foothill's JV football team came away with a decisive 41-0 win, over Berkeley. The defense took the field first, forcing Berkeley to punt after three plays. Running back Steven Yoshida scored on Foothill's first possession with an 11-yard touchdown run. The tough Falcon defense, led by Tony Barnett, Neil Shearer and Mitchell Dal Porto, blocked a Berkeley punt and Kyle Howell recovered the ball in the end zone for the second score.

The Falcons were strong through the second half including a fumble recovery by Jeff Randel at the Berkeley 45-yard line. The turnover led to halfback Adam Miles going 40 yards for the last touchdown of the night.

Amador's JV team posted its second win of the season topping Kennedy 35-6. Led by the offensive line of Craig Martin, Clay St. Dennis, Max Deschamps, Tyler Shotwell, Donald Romero and Dan Shoemake, Amador scored on its first possession when B.J. Concepcion scored on a 55-yard run capping a 78-yard drive on three plays. From then on it was all Amador. The Dons totaled 328 yards rushing and 60 yards in the air. Concepcion scored twice more and gained a total of 106 yards. Brandon Larson and Bryan Brown also scored touchdowns for the Dons. The defense, led by Larson with four tackles, shut down Kennedy's game on the ground. Mike Tsairides had two interceptions and a 25-yard punt return.
Frosh Football

Amador's freshman football team won its season opener 20-8 against Stockton last Thursday. Defensively, Chip Becker, J.R. Souza, Brent Starkey, Wesley Smith, Chris Decar and Nathan Creighton led with key tackles. Late in the first half the Dons capped off a 46-yard scoring drive with a Pat Espiritu to James Peters pass completion that brought the score to a 6-6 tie. Early in the fourth quarter, Creighton returned a 45-yard punt for a touchdown.
