Thomas 'Ray' Cuddy

Former Pleasanton resident Thomas "Ray" Cuddy died Aug. 9 in Carmichael, Calif. He was 92.

Born in Cooper, Iowa, on Oct. 7, 1911, he lived in Pleasanton for six years, and for the last six months, he made Folsom, Calif., his home.

He was a former parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church and S.I.R.S. and was a 73-year member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by two sons, Thomas Cuddy of Crosby, Texas, and Robert Cuddy of Wichita, Kan.; two daughters, Patricia Rabada and Nancy Pennell, both of Pleasanton; a brother; a sister; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Two wives preceded him in death, Elizabeth Cuddy and Arlene Cuddy.

A Mass celebrating his life was held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, and he was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.

Memorial donations may be made to a preferred charity. John L. Volz

John L. Volz, a 10-year Pleasanton resident, died Aug. 12. He was 97.

A Phoenix native, he was born on Oct. 11, 1906, and was raised in Los Angeles.

He graduated from the University of Southern California and was a chemical engineer with Union Oil until World War II, when he served in the U.S. Navy.

He retired as a captain from the naval reserves and for 20 years, he operated Volz Construction in the Los Angeles area. In 1969, he retired to the San Juan Islands in Washington state, pursuing his passion for fishing and world travel as well as his commitment to civic and church responsibilities.

In 1994, he moved to Pleasanton to live with his daughter. In addition to writing his autobiography, he also collected stamps.

He leaves his daughter, Gretta Spurr of Pleasanton; his son, Edward Volz of Seattle; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

His wife of 65 years, Aleda King Volz, preceded him in death in 1994.

A private memorial service was held in Seattle. June Duncan

Longtime Pleasanton resident June Duncan died Aug. 13. A third generation Californian, she was born in Oakland in 1924 and was a Pleasanton resident since 1961. She had been married to James J. Duncan, who predeceased her in 2000.

She was devoted to her family, her church and her friends, and she was a loving and compassionate woman whose life was marked by strength, grace and dignity. She was an inspiration to her children, grandchildren and others who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Diane Wardin, Susan Jones, Jim Duncan and Scott Duncan; their spouses; her grandchildren, Haleh, Alison, Ian, Ryan, Justin, Garrett, Danielle and Chase; and one great-grandchild, Mia.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Remembrances may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Manuel Melo

Manuel Melo, a 29-year Pleasanton resident, died in Fremont on Aug. 21. He was 74.

Born in Azores, Portugal, on May 2, 1930, he had lived in Africa for 16 years prior to moving to Pleasanton in 1975.

He worked for Lucky Stores in San Ramon and was a gardener for Pleasanton Properties for 28 years.

He was a member of I.D.E.S.-L.P., I.P.F.E.S. of Tracy and Estrela da Manha e Santo Agostinho. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed gardening and reading.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Fatima Melo; a daughter, Lucia Furtado of Pleasanton; a brother, Rogerio Melo of Canada; a sister, Lucia Freitas of Hayward; and two grandchildren.

His son, David Melo, died in 1981.

A rosary and Mass celebrating his life was held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, and he was buried at St. Augustine's Cemetery. Mihran Krikorian

Pleasanton resident Mihran Krikorian, 83, died Aug. 22 in Oakland.

Born in Fresno on May 28, 1921, he was a Pleasanton resident for 36 years and had lived in Oakland for 10 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a navigator during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

A certified public accountant for 55 years, he had earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of San Francisco.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Roxie Krikorian; two sons, Michael Krikorian and David Krikorian; a sister, Annette Lilian; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. Vartan Armenian Church in Oakland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Special Olympics. Arnold Frank Marty

Former Foothill High School custodian Arnold Frank Marty died Aug. 25 in Livermore. He was 73.

A Livermore native and resident, he was born on Oct. 14, 1930; he resided in Alameda County for his entire life.

He worked for Foothill High for 17 years, and during the 1940s when he was 13 years old, he worked for rose grower Jackson and Perkins.

A fisherman and gardener, he also enjoyed watching movies, playing cards and going to Reno.

He was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

He leaves his fiancˇe Laveta Fagundes; two sisters, Josephine Klingler of Manteca and Silvia Leipelt of Escalon; two brothers, Paul Marty and Anton Marty, both of Pleasanton; 10 nephews and three nieces.

A graveside service was held at St. Michael's Cemetery.
