County planners meet here Thursday on asphalt plant
(August 27, 2004) The Alameda County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, to review operations of an asphalt batch mixing plant across the Arroyo del Valle from Vineyard Avenue.
The plant, which was opened last year by the Granite Construction Co. as an accessory to the existing Eliot Quarry operated by RMC Pacific Materials, has been the subject of complaints by residents who live in the Vineyard Corridor. The Pleasanton school district also has asked the county to order the asphalt plant closed out of concern that emissions could affect the air around Neal Elementary School, which is planned for a nearby site.
Earlier this month, the Pleasanton City Council voted 3-1 to send a letter to county authorities in support of closing the plant.
Granite received approval from the county, which has jurisdiction over the site, in 2002 to build and operate a hot mix asphalt plant. Granite also received a permit from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District since there is no school within 1,000 feet of the plant, although there would be if Neal were built.
The Planning Commission meeting is open to the public and will be held in the Pleasanton City Council chamber in the Civic Center at 200 Old Bernal Ave.
