(August 27, 2004) Crook swaps ads for stereo
An unknown suspect smashed a car window Aug. 23 at the Stoneridge Shopping Center parking lot to swipe a $600 stereo, and left a newspaper's classified ad page in the stereo's place.
Police reported that the victim parked her 1995 Jeep about 11 a.m. When she returned to the vehicle about 3:30 p.m., she discovered that the rear driver's side wing window was broken and the vehicle's stereo was missing, police said.
The victim found a crumpled newspaper, with the heading "Classified Flea Market" on the back seat that did not belong to her; police took the newspaper as evidence.
While guests were away, thieves played
A pair of Hilton Hotel guests suffered thefts of property valued at more than $6,000 on Aug. 17 while they were away from their individual rooms at 7050 Johnson Drive.
Police reported that the first theft occurred between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., while the victim was out of his room. The victim told police he was certain his door was locked when he left his room. However, upon return, the victim discovered that his digital camera, sunglasses and iPOD were missing, police said. The victim also told police that someone had rifled through his baggage because his property was askew. The room did not have a balcony and there were no signs of forced entry. Police suspect the thief may have had a passkey to enter the room.
In a separate case, another victim reported that his $5,410 laptop computer had been taken from his room on the same day. Police believe the theft occurred between 8:30 a.m. and 9:10 p.m., also while the victim was out of his room.
