Golf club burglars nabbed

Pleasanton police arrested two men last week in connection with a rash of golf club thefts occurring last month.

Investigators said Christopher Joseph Berry and John Charles Punches, both 18, were suspects in at least eight residential burglaries.

The pair was arrested after a Via de Los Milagros resident called police about 10:15 p.m. Aug. 11 to report that a suspicious man had been in his neighbor's garage, police said.

The witness told police that the man left the garage with his neighbor's golf clubs, and he was able to provide officers with a description of the suspect as well as his vehicle.

A short time later, police detained Berry and Punches, who were in a vehicle matching the witness' description. Police said the stolen golf clubs were recovered from Berry's vehicle and he later admitted taking the clubs from the residence.

Earlier last week, officers had identified Berry as a suspect in several other burglaries and he had been linked to stolen golf clubs sold to Play-It-Again Sports, police said.

Investigations are under way to identify additional stolen property and "a significant amount of stolen mail" recovered in the pair's possession, police said. Dirty clothes for dirty deed

Dirty clothes were in the bag Aug. 15 when an overnight thief walked off with a gym bag and stereo equipment valued at $555 from a car parked off Foothill Road near Bernal Avenue.

The victim told police he had parked his 1991 Honda Civic about 12:30 a.m. after returning from a camping trip. He had left a gym bag full of dirty clothes in the car, which was left unlocked with the windows down and the key in the ignition, police said.

About 7:30 a.m., the victim discovered that an unknown person had entered the car and taken not only the gym bag, but also two speakers from the back seat area and an amplifier from the trunk, police said.

A fingerprint was also recovered, which was taken as evidence. Waiting to be claimed

The police reported this week these items were found and turned in to the department. To claim, call 931-5100. ¥ Green and gray bicycle, case no. 04-4943 ¥ Black bicycle, 04-4878 ¥ Camera, 04-4991 ¥ Red bicycle and green bicycle, 04-5143 ¥ Silver bicycle, 04-5086
