U19's claim Far West crown, heads for Nationals

The Pleasanton Rage U19's took the regional title after defeating 2-0 state champion Southern California Samba at the 2004 U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships held last week in Spokane, Wash., sending them to nationals.

Second half goals by Jennifer Tuttle, with an assist by Tina Sutorius, and Tina Estrada, assisted by Julia Schnugg, boosted the team to its winning margin.

In their title run, the U19's not only faced two very strong Southern California teams twice, they placed first in one of the toughest preliminary pools in the tournament and outscored the opposition 13-1.

Under the coaching direction of Jay Fischer and Philippe Blin, the U19's defeated, 2-1, the Southern California Blues in the semifinals and the Arizona Sereno '85 White, 4-0, in the quarterfinals. In pool play, they shutout the Blues, 2-0, Washington Eastside FC 84 Red, 5-0, and tied 0-0 with Samba.

The team advances to the Youth Soccer National Championships slated July 20-25 at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida, pitting them against champions from three other regions in the United States.

The team also earned the Kohl's Fair Play Award, a referee, state representative and U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series committee selected honor. The award recognizes the team's display of good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

In addition to Tuttle, Sutorius, Estrada and Schnugg, players on the U19's are Cori Alexander, Dani Amarant, Kim Bingham, Julie Gailey, Darby Kroyer, Katie Mahoney, Caty Mitchell, Lindsay Parker, Hillary Schwarzbach, Tana Smothermaon, Whitney Temple and Lauren Tippets.
Pleasanton to compete at national fast-pitch competitions

Last weekend, three Pleasanton Phantom girls fast-pitch softball teams earned a bid to the ASA Western National competitions.

The teams in the 18-and-under, 12-and-under and the 10-and-under age divisions all won the Oakland ASA Metro qualifier, defeating formidable teams to earn their spots in the National competition slated for Aug. 2-8.

The 18-and-under team took the best two-out-of-three game format overcoming Castro Valley Synergy. After dropping the first game, the team rallied for two consecutive wins to earn their spot.

The 12-and-under team won four consecutive games during the weekend, beating Castro Valley Synergy 7-4 in the final. The Phantom team also recently claimed victory at the Devil Mountain tournament in San Ramon and placed second in two other tournaments in San Carlos and Vallejo.

In an exciting game, the 10-and-under team garnered the top spot in three consecutive games, crushing the Synergy 10's team after going into extra innings. To add to the Phantom 10's win list, they triumphed in victory at the Joshua Richardson tournament in Vallejo, while placing second in the Jan McPherson tournament in San Carlos and the Livermore Smoke Fathers Day tournament. Overall, the girls are 17-3, outscoring their opponents by a score of 208-36.

Before heading to the Western National competition, the teams will compete at several other tournaments, including the Pleasanton Summer Classic on July 16-18 at the Pleasanton Sports Park. This tournament will host more than 45 top Northern California teams.
Pleasanton Pony Black Sox capture Diablo Valley League championship

The Pleasanton Pony Black Sox completed its Diablo Valley League season last weekend by winning the league championship when the Clayton Valley Pioneers forfeited the game. The Pioneers were unable to play the best of three championship series, handing the title to the Black Sox.

The Black Sox finished the season with a 24-4 record and had an outstanding .425 team batting average for the season. The Black Sox scored 236 runs while allowing their opponents only 76. Troy Channing was the most valuable player for the regular season, hitting 12 home runs and posting a .525 batting average. Ethan Delano had an outstanding season on the mound, striking out 78 batters in just 44 innings.

In addition to Channing and Delano, Black Sox team members were Brett Christopher, Cody Demera, Chris Doleski, J.R. Graham, Doug Holecheck, Trevor Howard, Brandon Hudson, Carson Kvaternik, Garret Lenhardt, Steven Pangelinan, Greg Richard and Max Temple, coached by Brian Graham with the help of Rob Bowers and Nick Burns. The Black Sox and the Red Sox will now separate into their age-specific teams for post-season tournaments. The 14-year-olds will join the Black Sox and the 13-year-olds will join the Red Sox. District playoffs for each team begin July 11.
Colt Rockies streak through wins

The Colt Rockies, age 15- and 16-year-old division, continued their streak by winning four more games last week. They emerged as victors against the Pirates 6-4, the Giants 10-0, Pittsburg 11-2 and Alhambra 5-2.

The team was led by Dakota Laufenberg, who pitched six innings for the win in the first game. Laufenberg struck out five runners while allowing five hits. He was 3 for 10 at the plate in the four-game series, scoring six runs.

Closing in the first and the third games was Ryan Lysaght, who allowed three hits and three runs, while striking out another three. With a double and five runs, Lysaght was 4 for 11 batting for the series.

Chris Hillman pitched three innings in the second game and seven innings in the fourth game, recording 16 strikeouts while allowing six hits.

Hillman had six hits in 13 at bats, knocking out a pair of doubles, four RBIs and three runs for the series.

Tommy Gale got the win in the third game with his four-inning pitching. He struck out four runners and allowed six hits and two runs.

Gale continued his hitting streak going 8 for 14, with three doubles, seven runs and six RBIs. Rounding out the dynamic playing, Joey Berg scored two runs and had five RBIs. Eric Hong also scored twice and had three RBIs. Joey Willis crossed home plate twice and had four RBIs and David Zetterland was 6 for 13 with a double, a run, and five RBIs.
Pleasanton Pony Black Sox defeated at Riverside USSSA 14U Tournament

The Pleasanton Pony Black Sox team of 14-year-olds were victors in two games before being eliminated in the third preliminary round robin games at the USSSA 14U Tournament held in Riverside in Southern California last weekend.

In their first game they faced the Santa Clarita Mudcats. The Black Sox jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, led by a double by Troy Channing and a triple by Robby LeClair, each scoring 2 runs.

Santa Clarita tried to rally in the bottom of the inning, but they were stopped in their tracks by Brett Christopher's great throw from center to get the runner out at home plate to end the inning. Santa Clarita scraped in one run in the second inning to cut the lead to 5-1, but the Black Sox exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Doubles by Christian Ruge, Trevor Howard, and Channing led the scoring outburst to give the Black Sox a 10-1 lead. The Black Sox piled on five more runs in the fourth inning, led by Christopher's home run to lead off the inning, Max Temple's triple and good base running by Same Dierking and Carson Kvaternik to score on the Mudcats' throwing errors.

Santa Clarita mounted a furious rally in the bottom of the fourth by scoring 9 runs on a combination of hitting and poor fielding by the Black Sox. The Black Sox were able to end the rally in the fifth inning and close out the Mudcats for an exciting 15-11 win. LeClair, Ruge and Brandon Renker combined on the mound for the win. The Black Sox then faced the Moreno Valley Dodgers in their second game. The MV Dodgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Black Sox came back to take a 2-1 lead led by a triple by J.R. Graham and Temple's sacrifice fly. The Dodgers tied it in the third inning.

The Black Sox countered for what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth when Temple singled, stole second and third and scored on Channing's single to give the Black Sox a 3-2 lead.

Graham came in to pitch in the sixth inning and struck out four out of the last six batters, striking out the side in the sixth inning.

Ruge lead the Black Sox defensively with a big double play in the fifth inning and the game ending out on a great catch on a sharp line drive to second. The Black Sox won 3-2. The Black Sox' final game was against Marin's North Bay Extreme team. Again the opponents jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but the Black Sox countered with two runs lead by Channing's double and some excellent base running by Howard to enable Channing to score.

The Extreme struck back for two runs in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead, and widened that lead to 5-2 in the third inning with a two-run home run. In the bottom of the third, the Black Sox clawed back two runs with Temple's leadoff double, Howard's single, and a great double by Ruge to the right center gap.

In gripping action, the Extreme struck for four runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-4 lead. But again the Black Sox roared back with singles by Christopher, Graham, Temple, a sacrifice fly by Howard, and another double by Ruge to narrow the gap to 9-8.

The Black Sox could not match the Extreme's heat, as the Marin team scored two runs in the fifth and busted out in the sixth inning with six runs, closing out a 17-8 victory over the Black Sox.
