$23,000 enrichment funds distributed to schools

The Pleasanton Partnerships in Education (PPIE) Foundation has awarded its 2003-04 Enrichment Grants, funding 22 projects in the Pleasanton Unified School District.

The awards, which range from $500 to $2,500, were selected based on creativity, innovative thinking and student focus. Teachers and school district employees submitted grant proposals to fund elementary, middle and high school projects in academic areas such as art, foreign language, music, science, social studies and technology.

Grant awardees are: ¥ Melinda Ballard, Mohr Elementary, $158 for books supporting the second-grade science curriculum; ¥ Patty Banks, PUSD Media/Technology, $800, DVD authoring; ¥ David Bolin, Pleasanton Middle, $300 to pilot an after-school Spanish club; ¥ Johnnie Borris and Erin Sharps, Walnut Grove Elementary, $500, character education literature; ¥ Mary Jo Carreon, Alisal Elementary, $1,107, classroom library books developing reading strategies; ¥ Carol DiGirolamo, Alisal Elementary, $500, second-grade Community of Character literature; ¥ Lynn Gatehouse, Harvest Park Middle, $500, newly approved middle-school course; ¥ Lori Gibson and Lori Sjodahl, Mohr Elementary, $467, carpet in kindergarten to increase color concepts and spatial awareness; ¥ Jonathan Grantham, Amador Valley High, $1,800, to purchase three French horns for the band program; ¥ Gary Hicklin, PUSH Technology, $2,500, equipment supporting multimedia and online staff and student training modules; ¥ Eugenia Kawashima, Megan Lipman, Patty Fletcher, Mark McCoy and Bill Bowen, Hart Middle, $2,408, fish tanks and equipment to raise Steelhead trout and Chinook salmon eggs at all three middle schools; ¥ M. Kim Lounsbury, Hearst Elementary, $1,300, Magiscopes for the science program; ¥ Lata Mistry, Amador Valley High, $2,498, laboratory equipment for the biotechnology course; ¥ Renee Ogle, Amador Valley High, $2,500, skeletal models and tool sets for the health, anatomy and physiology classes; ¥ Elizabeth Patock, Mohr Elementary, $113, grocery store and post office play centers for kindergarten; ¥ Elizabeth Patock, Judy Brandt, Denise Butler, Lori Gibson and Lori Sjodahl, Mohr Elementary, $136, art project drying racks; ¥ Scott Sears, Foothill High, $2,488, light kits and audio equipment for video production class' Public Service Announcement development; ¥ Lori Sjodahl, Mohr Elementary, $257, supplies enhancing the kindergarten classroom play area; ¥ Linda Stanford, Mohr Elementary, $375, first-grade reading books; ¥ James Vaughn, Amador Valley High, $500, funding to support Black History Month Assembly; ¥ Elaine Weaver, PUSD Media/Technology, $1,731, DVD duplication tower; and ¥ Mame Wisniewski and Lynn Huntsman, Walnut Grove Elementary, $688, community carpets for two kindergarten classrooms.

PPIE has awarded more than $23,000 this year through its grant program. In addition to grants, PPIE, a community-based volunteer group, also operates service programs supporting PUSD schools, such as Career Day. This year more than 100 business speakers participated in the event, discussing more than 70 career topics and providing career-related information to 2,000 students.
