(July 02, 2004) Firefighters urge: Let pros handle the fireworks
The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department is asking folks to be careful this Fourth of July holiday. Even "safe and sane" fireworks are dangerous, it said in a press release, noting that small handheld sparklers burn at a temperature of 1,800 degrees. Many emergency room visits are the result of children injured while using these fireworks, said the release, plus bystanders can be injured when these fireworks are used incorrectly. Injuries include burns, injuries to eyes and hearing loss.
Another byproduct is when vegetation, weeds or low hanging tree limbs catch fire. Plus fireworks start roof fires all too frequently, noted the firefighters.
Pets may also be adversely affected by fireworks. They may become frightened by the loud noises and bright lights, plus could become ill from eating the remains of fireworks.
Because of these problems, Pleasanton has an ordinance prohibiting the sale, use, distribution or possession of all fireworks, said the release.
Professional fireworks displays are being presented at Robertson Park on South Livermore Avenue in Livermore on the Fourth of July, along with family oriented games and live music, all beginning at 5 p.m. Local organizations will provide food booths, desserts and novelties.
San Ramon is hosting a Star Spangled Spectacular, which includes professional fireworks, bands and food sold by nonprofit groups. It takes place from 5-10 p.m. at San Ramon Central Park on Alcosta Boulevard near Bollinger Canyon and does not allow alcohol, dogs, fireworks or barbecues.
