Crook goes out for ice cream, cash and antiques

A burglar with a sweet-tooth struck a local restaurant overnight June 14 at 5901 Owens Drive, slipping away with more than $3,000 in property, including a 5-gallon container of pistachio ice cream.

Police reported that the burglary at Pleasant Asian Cuisine was discovered by the restaurant owner about 10:30 a.m. June 15. The owner told police she had locked all of the doors when she left the business about 10:30 p.m. the previous night.

Police said the suspect removed a screen from an unlocked window on the northeast side of the building. However that window was blocked by a double-tiered shelf. Items from that shelf were found outside. Police believe the unknown suspect gained entry into the restaurant through an unlocked window on the northwest side of the building. Once inside, the suspect ransacked a storage room and pried open a metal cabinet and two glass display cases, taking antique vases, bowls, tea sets and decorative plates, valued at $3,000, as well as about $120 in cash and the ice cream, police said. Climbing walls for a bike

A bicycle on the balcony was too tempting for a thief, who scaled an outside wall June 20 to the second-floor apartment for the $600 bike.

The victim told police he left his residence near Old Santa Rita Road about 11:30 a.m. When he left, his bicycle was on his second-floor balcony. Upon return about 10 p.m., the victim noticed that his sliding glass door was open, police said. Looking outside on the balcony, the victim discovered his bike was missing.

He told police he did not know if the unknown suspect had been inside his home because he had several valuable items that were left untouched. Police believe that the burglar climbed up to the balcony and lowered the bike back down to the walkway. The case has been forwarded to investigations. Truck snatched without a clue

A 1986 Toyota pickup truck was stolen sometime between 7 and 9:25 p.m. June 12 from the Stoneridge Shopping Center parking lot.

Police reported that the San Leandro victim had parked the tan pickup truck in the south lot near the entrance for Macy's women's clothing. The victim told police she had locked the doors, and she did not authorize anyone to take the vehicle. Police said all of the truck keys were accounted for and there were no signs of forced entry, witnesses or other clues.
