(June 11, 2004) Bronco Red Sox capture Citrus Heights Memorial Day division championship
The Pleasanton Pony Bronco Red Sox team went undefeated, winning the tournament division championship held May 29-31 in Citrus Heights. The Red Sox captured their pool play by beating Orangevale, Tara Hills Blue and the Walnut Creek Bulldawg Blue. The Red Sox team took the overall top seed beating the Tara Hills Red in a five-inning game to advance to the finals. In a very close game, the Red Sox came back to rally in the late innings from a five-run deficit to beat the Arcade Extreme 7-5 and capture the overall championship.
The Red Sox pitching combined to strikeout 48 batters in five games. Leading the Red Sox offense was Justin Hollar with three triples, Matthew Krisman with one triple, Alex Palsha with three doubles and David Johnson with two doubles. Alex Blidy, Brian Hamm, Dylan Rogelstad and Carter Loud also delivered doubles. The Red Sox ended the tournament scoring 59 runs while only giving up 16.
Summer baseball camp
A tenth annual summer baseball camp for boys and girls will be held at the varsity baseball diamond at Foothill High School, 4375 Foothill Road, from 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Wednesday, June 21-23; the fee is $100. Guided by Foothill's head baseball coach Angelo Scavone and varsity staff, the camp is geared for players 7 to 14 years old and will teach players the fundamentals of offense, defense and pitching.
It will also cover bunting, catching, throwing and base-running skills. All participants will receive individual attention to the fundamentals. Upon completion, participants will receive a camp T-shirt, photograph and certificate. Register by mailing checks, payable to Pony Baseball, to Pony Baseball, P.O. Box 1043, 94566. Include the player's name, birth date, address, daytime telephone, e-mail address, parent's name and information, such as current skill level, positions played and league affiliation. Gene's Fine Foods girls softball team takes division title
Gene's Fine Foods won the Pleasanton Minor Rec Division Girls Softball Championship, June 5, outscoring Pro Finish Motor Sports 13-3 and then beating out Fernando's Mexican Restaurant 11-2 in the final.
Gene's had dominated the pitching in the fifth- and sixth-grade division, as Haley Douglas struck out 16 batters in six innings, and Rachel Cilk had three strikeouts in four innings for the two games. Molly Ladhoff went six for six, Vanessa Medina and Christina Jayson had four hits each for the day and Ali Rodriguez, Michelle Dickinson, Erica Altman and Audy Giovanetti provided great defensive plays for Gene's.
Fernando's had a great run in the playoffs, winning three games to reach the final. Kelsey Martin, Caitlin Hogan and Melanie Sensiba were instrumental in the wins.
