Children can track their reading with 'Maze Mania'

Labyrinths and mazes are taking center stage in the library's reading program this summer for ages preschool through middle school.

Beginning Tuesday, children can sign up for a "Maze Mania" game board to track their reading time and earn prizes. The game will end Aug. 3.

Children are also encouraged to write their own books this summer to enter in the Newcott-Caldebery Young Authors Program. They may be submitted at the children's desk from June 15-Sept. 15. Entry forms are available at the children's desk.

The library will host dynamic events this summer: a puppet show, a family concert of music for children, and a children's theater production. Some summer highlights at the library are: ¥ Sarah Wilson, author and illustrator of "George Hogglesberry: Grade School Alien, Beware the Dragons!" and "Big Day on the River," will present a family program at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 17. ¥ A fast-paced, entertaining program called "Gotcha! Non-Fiction Books that Kids (and Adults) Will Love" will be presented by Kathleen Baxter, renowned children's literature consultant, from 2-3 p.m. and 7-8 p.m., Monday, June 21. The program is suitable for third grade through adult. ¥ "Many Voices, Many Lands" is a new series that will offer special family story times in Spanish, Farsi, Japanese, Mandarin and Russian. June events are at 2 p.m., Friday, June 25, with a family time in English and Russian to include storytelling, puppets and songs; 7:30 p.m., Monday, June 28, a program in Mandarin. ¥ Swashbucklers, pirates and fair maidens will be onstage at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Thursday, July 1, at the library when members of CLAP! (Creative Learning Arts Programs) bring adventure tales to life. Children can participate in the creative drama, storytelling and sound effects. Suitable for children in K-5.
