AAUW scholars

Four women, two from Pleasanton, were awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Livermore-Pleasanton-Dublin Branch of American Association of University Women. The awards are made to outstanding women graduates of local high schools who are going into their junior year in college.

Erin McWilliams, a 2002 graduate of Amador Valley High who is planning to attend University of Pacific, will receive the Virginia Madden Scholarship Award. Abigail Orellana, a graduate of Foothill High and Las Positas College, attends UC Berkeley.

The other two women are Christina Bluck, a graduate of Granada High School in Livermore, and Chelise Stroud of Berkeley High. Wheels helps spare air

Wheels and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District are providing free rides on fixed route buses whenever a Spare the Air alert is issued this season. These days are announced when air quality is expected to exceed health standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Residents may sign up to be notified by e-mail of Spare the Air Days at www.sparetheair.org.

Wheels, the bus service of the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority, has free fares for seniors 60 and older from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday. The Midday Free-Ride passes are available at the Pleasanton Senior Center, 5353 Sunol Blvd. Call 455-7500 for details. Otherwise fares are 40 cents for seniors; $1.25 students and adults; under 6 free. Ticket books are also available for lower fares. Marching to London

The Amador Valley High School Marching Band and Colorguard were chosen to perform at the London New Year's Day Parade in January 2005. This is a prestigious event for which over 1 million people line the streets of central London to watch floats and bands from all over the world. The band members will be having fundraisers to pay for their trip. To donate, contact band direction Jon Grantham at 461-6100.
