Rotary raising funds with commemorative paving

by Teresa C. Brown

The Rotary Club of Pleasanton is giving another meaning to building a commemorative project brick by brick. The community-service organization is kicking off its Arroyo del Valle enhancement project by selling personalized bricks that will be used to pave new bench areas off Main Street at the arroyo.

The bricks, sized 4-by-4 inches and 8-by-8 inches, are available for $100 and $250, respectively. All proceeds will fund materials used in the project. To order a personalized brick, contact Rotary Club member Keith McKay at 413-6921.

The Rotary Club's project is being completed in celebration of the international organization's centennial anniversary in 2005.

Among the work slated, the club will remove debris and non-native vegetation, install new plants, update the existing kiosk and create a new overlook. Electrical work for lighting under the bridge will be completed as well as the construction and installation of two benches.

The City Council approved the project May 4, and it is expected to begin this summer. The city's Parks and Recreation Commission has committed $50,000 toward the project. The club will raise another $10,000 to finish.

The city will grade and clear the hillside, install an irrigation system, and improve the path leading from the street to the bridge area.

In addition to offering commemorative bricks, the Rotary Club is also holding a fundraising dinner at Vic's All Star Kitchen on Aug. 7. Tickets for the dinner at $15 and are available by calling Janet Burton, 417-5905.

The Rotary Club is an international service organization with members in the business and professional community.
