BMX park plans going forward

by Teresa C. Brown

Just over half a dozen residents gathered last Monday at the Veterans Memorial Building to discuss the BMX park design, which is moving forward for committee and commission approvals this month, said Jim Wolfe, director of the city's Parks and Community Services.

The nearly 3-acre park will be constructed at the Shadow Cliff Regional Recreation Area.

The park will consist of a single track with an area for experienced riders, Wolfe said. "We were talking about two separate areas, a track and free form," he explained. That idea was dropped for a single-track design because a free-form area can be difficult to manage, Wolfe said.

Instead, the track will also have elaborate jumps for seasoned riders. "We'll have better control over what's built out there," Wolfe added.

The design will be presented to both the Youth Master Plan Implementation Committee and the Parks and Recreation Commission, which will review the design during its May 10 meeting slated for 7:30 p.m. at 200 Old Bernal Ave. If approved, it will go on the City Council agenda as an informational item, Wolfe said.
