Foothill JV softball undefeated
(April 30, 2004) Dons' Holt, Learned end baseball losing streak
by Heidi Massie
Not only is Foothill's varsity softball team ranked No. 1 in the league with a 6-0 record, the JV team is just as unbeatable this season. Following its 11-1 win over Amador on Tuesday night, the JV team's record stands at an impressive 6-0 in the East Bay Athletic League. Talent runs deep in the team with pitcher Emily Robertson leading the team in both defense and offense, and Alissa Murphy and Kelly Wolfe as top hitters.
Earlier this month, the team won the third annual Standley Cup JV Softball Tournament where in five games, the Falcons scored 69 runs while giving up only two. Robertson was named Top Pitcher for the tournament. Of the five games she pitched, two were perfect games. She pitched 21 innings of shut-out ball with 43 strikeouts. She also batted .438 and scored 10 runs.
Wolfe, named tournament MVP, batted .713 with six RBIs and scored nine runs. Brea Hoffman batted .526 including 10 RBIs and two doubles. Nina Cefalo hit .438 with five RBIs and Murphy scored 10 runs as the leadoff batter. Shortstop Lauren Gandy played solid defense with no errors.
Baseball
Amador's varsity baseball team ended its three-game EBAL losing streak with a convincing 7-1 win over California on Friday. Rob Learned led the way with a complete-game victory on the mound and a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate.
Cal got on the board first, with an unearned run in the first inning but Amador answered with two runs with two outs. Brett Holt reached base on a hit-by-pitch, and moved to second on the first of Learned's hits. Chris Lewis then singled to right, scoring Holt, and Learned scored from first base on an error.
The Dons added two more runs in the third, thanks to two Cal errors and hits by Holt and Learned. The Dons added another two runs when Travis Knuppe and Pat Glenn walked, setting up Holt and Learned again. They didn't disappoint, delivering RBI singles to put Amador ahead 6-1.
The Holt-and-Learned show contributed another run in the bottom of the sixth when Holt was hit by a pitch and Learned drove a double to deep center field, plating pinch-runner Mat Olivero from first.
Swimming/diving
The Falcon swimmers and divers added another win to their record last Friday when they beat Livermore. The varsity girls overwhelmed Livermore 122-64, as did the varsity boys 128-58. The JV teams was equally strong, with the girls winning 144-40 and boys 121-39.
Varsity swimmer Jennifer Narum, who is expected to qualify for the Olympic Trials next month, led the team with first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:57.07) and 100 freestyle (56.06). Narum also contributed to the 200 medley team win with Kirsten Reed, Kimmy Court and Ashley Schempp. The divers swept the event with Rebecca Payne, Casey Brush and Krissa Partridge finishing first, second and third, respectively, in the one-meter dive.
The divers of the boys varsity team also won all three spots with Matt Trader in first, Wesley Janisen in second and Gary Mancini in third. Foothill also cleaned up in the 100 backstroke event with Mike Arndt (1:00.66), Matthew Kwan (1:00.81), and Peter Bucchianerri (1:05.64).
The JV girls won the 100 breaststroke event with Julianne Strom finishing in first (1:17.20), followed by Caitlin Guidoux (1:17.86), and Cindy Cech (1:20.50). The 500 freestyle event went to Foothill as well with Samantha Panger taking first (5:57.62), Jessica Cech (6:12.50) second, and Camille Lowder (6:21.80) third.
The JV boys swept numerous events including the 100 individual medley team led by Joey Cooper (1:06.54), followed by Kyle Salem (1:06.98) and Derek Masuda (1:11.63).
