News Digest News Digest (April 30, 2004)

First Wednesdays to begin

The theme of the premier First Wednesday Street Party 2004 is a natural - Cinco de Mayo, being held Wednesday, May 5. It will feature the flavors of Mexico and Latin America, as well as the popular street booths and the fun of seeing neighbors and friends.

The free street fair will take place from 6-9 p.m. on Main Street, which will be closed that evening from St. John Street to Old Bernal Avenue from 5-10 p.m. A Beer and Wine Garden will also be open, plus many downtown merchants will keep their doors open for summer shopping and dining. New parks naming policy

The City Council approved the new policy for naming parks that the Parks and Recreation Commission formulated recently. The policy remains the same for the council to choose a name after the commission submits up to three choices for a park or recreation facility. In practice usually one name has been recommended, staff reported.

Two naming criteria were added to the policy: Names for all parks or recreation facilities should provide easy, recognizable reference; and, requests to name parks or facilities after specific individuals will be considered no earlier than five years after their death. This is because evaluating requests would be extremely difficult during the emotion time right after someone dies. Register for summer school

Registration is being held with a May 14 deadline for Pleasanton Unified School District's summer school session. Brochures will be distributed to students in grades K-5 to take home; for students in grades 6-12, registration forms are available at each school's counseling office. Summer sessions for students entering grades 1-8 in the fall will be held June 21-July 16 at Alisal Elementary, Walnut Grove Elementary and Harvest Park Middle. High school will be held June 16-July 23.

In addition to remedial classes, the summer session offers fee-based enrichment academies. A writing academy and Spectrum of Science program will be offered at Valley View Elementary. For a full listing, visit www.pleasanton.k21.ca.us or call 463-1104.
