Foothill boys lacrosse defeats Amador in overtime

by Heidi Massie

Amador boys varsity baseball opened East Bay Athletic League play with a convincing 12-4 victory over Livermore, followed by a 7-3 win over James Logan Saturday, giving the Dons their sixth straight win. Against Livermore, the Dons' 10-hit attack was led by Craig Sewall with a single and bases-loaded double, good for three RBI's. Chris Lewis knocked in three runs and Stephen Gatehouse drove home four runs with a bases-loaded triple and a groundout. The defensive highlight of the game was an unassisted double play by third-baseman Brett Zollman in the fourth inning.

The Dons opened the scoring against James Logan when Stephen Gatehouse led off with a single, moved up to second on an error, advanced to third on a single by Nate Young, and came home on a bases-loaded walk to Chris Lewis. Craig Sewall held the Colts as he threw four shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks, to notch his first win.

Though Foothill lost their baseball league opener to San Ramon 5-4, they came back to beat Monte Vista last Friday, 4-2, improving their record to 9-4 overall, 1-1 EBAL. Pitcher Brad Bergesen, considered the best in the EBAL, kept the Mustangs hitting in check, striking out 10 batters in seven innings. The Falcons' offensive attack came on early with a home run by Brandon Crawford. Catcher Eric Hengehold drove in two runs in the second inning on a double.
JV Baseball

Amador's JV team began league play with an exciting 11-8 win over Livermore, improving their overall record to 11-1. After falling behind 8-2, Amador's bats came alive in the fourth inning, scoring 7 runs for a 9-8 lead, with a key grand slam home run by Colin Hoyer. Key contributors were Chris Hillman hitting 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Keith Burton hitting 1 for 2 with 2 runs and an RBI. David Rowse pitched five great innings in relief, picking up his fourth win.
Boys Lacrosse

Foothill's boys varsity lacrosse team beat Amador 10-9 last week in one sudden victory overtime period on an assist and goal by Dan Proctor and Colin Tracey, respectively. The hard-fought game was controlled by Foothill in the first half. Amador Valley got their game together in the third quarter taking back the game with a 9-8 score. Loren Shoch tied the game with 30 seconds left in regulation that took the game into overtime.

Seniors Tracey and Jesse Painter will be attending Division II Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont next year. Tracey has also been selected to play for the USA West Lacrosse Team and will travel to Australia in June to compete against several world teams.

Amador's team traveled to Boulder, Colo., on Wednesday to compete in a national lacrosse tournament over spring break.
Girls Lacrosse

The Lady Falcons varsity lacrosse improved their undefeated record to 10-0-1 Tuesday with a win over St. Ignatius. Cristen Andrews led the scoring with six goals and two assists. Sarah Rachmiel added four goals and Haley Saxton had one assist. Goalie Shari Brokowsky had saves.
Boys Golf

Amador's boys golf team put up a valiant effort last Wednesday but came up short against last year's EBAL champion Monte Vista, losing 199-202.

The Dons were led by senior Ryan Manning and juniors Scott Gregory and Tony Guerrero, each carding 40s at home course Ruby Hill. Following the pack were Mike Ortega and Jeff Thomas who came in with 41s.

This week, the Dons flew to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and will compete in a national golf tournament during spring break.
