Undefeated Lady Falcons Lacrosse takes a tie
(March 26, 2004) Dons Tennis crushes Foothill in 7-2 win
by Heidi Massie
Foothill's girls lacrosse team has enjoyed an incredible season so far, winning their first six games. Making it seven straight wins was not in the cards for the Lady Falcons on Tuesday night when they met Miramonte and battled it out for a 5-5 tie. Nonetheless, the Foothill girls are ranked No. 1 in Northern California.
Leading the scoring for Foothill in Tuesday's game were Cristen Andrews and Sarah Rachmiel with two goals apiece, and a single by Kristen Brophy. Jackie Pugh had one assist for the Falcons, and goalie Shari Brokowsky had six saves.
Amador's girls lacrosse stormed Menlo-Atherton 12-2 on Tuesday. After a 4-0 first half, the Dons exploded with 8 goals while Menlo scored only 2, late in the game. Rebekah Cunningham led the Dons with 3 goals, Heather Chin and Whitney Metz scored twice, and Joanna LaFrancesca, Emma Bijesse, Jessica Leung, Stephanie Flowers and Kristen Lerch each added a score. Goalie Hannah Winter had five saves.
Boys Tennis
The Amador boys tennis team knew the match was theirs after winning five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches against Foothill Tuesday. With the win over cross-town rival Foothill, the Dons improved their league record to 4-2, while Foothill's record stands at 1-4.
Amador's No. 1 singles player Adam Wagner defeated Foothill's Trey Astbury in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Nick Quintana, No. 2 singles, also put it away in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, outplaying Foothill's Tim Tan.
Foothill's Chris Syinerlin defeated Ali Amini, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, while Amador's Billy Warm, No. 4 singles, played a very exciting match against Foothill's Tyler Saxton, winning in three sets.
Luke Gatten and partner Will Wang, No. 1 doubles, met their match against Foothill's Bharat Sunkavaly and partner Karun Vijayraghavan, 3-6,1-6.
Boys Volleyball
In their first league game, Foothill's varsity team fought a tough battle against San Ramon Valley, who shared the league title with the Falcons last year. After five games, the Wolves got the win over Foothill despite the Falcons winning two late in the match.
Leading the charge for Foothill were Joey Ballesteros with 10 kills, seven digs; Cameron Stewart with four kills and nine digs; and Pat Young with nine kills. Dustin May had a huge 24 assists.
The Dons varsity volleyball team defeated Livermore, 22-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-22, in their league opener. The Dons overall record improved to an impressive 6-0, 1-0 in the East Bay Athletic League.
Top contributors for Amador included Logan Daniels with five kills, 10 digs and five aces; Greg Ballard with nine kills and four blocks; and Sean Estes with 12 kills and six blocks.
Swimming
The Amador swimmers were swept by San Ramon Valley High last Friday in a meet dominated by false starts and disqualifications. Despite the loss, several Amador swimmers turned in strong times. Varsity girls team member Kristin Walovitch took first in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 58.38, and the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:05.04.
Boys Golf
Amador's golfers continued their winning ways Tuesday, defeating Granada 203-224 at Las Positas. With the win, the Dons EBAL record improved to 3-1.
Leading the way once again for the Dons was Jeff Thomas with a 1 over par 37.
"Jeff has the hot hand right now," commented coach Eric Thiel. Jeff also medalled for the Dons in Monday's tournament at Discovery Bay.
Following Jeff for the Dons was Tony Guerrero with a 39. Brad Botelho carded a 41, followed by Mike Ortega and Ryan Manning who rounded out the field with 43's.
