The Amador Valley gym was packed a week ago Wednesday for the boys basketball game against rival Foothill, with many fans standing on the court sidelines. What started out looking like a runaway game for Amador ended with a big 71-57 win for Foothill, thanks to second-half power shooting by Adam Greenaway, Brian McDonough and Anthony Martinez.

Amador came out strong and led 34-25 with two minutes remaining in the second period. Foothill's McDonough scored 6 points in 60 seconds and Martinez hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 36-34 lead at the half.

The Falcons sustained momentum throughout the second half and outscored the Dons to a 54-47 lead at the end of the third period.

Midway through the fourth, Amador closed within five points and the Dons had Stuart Yoshida on the break following a Falcon turnover. Yoshida drove for a layup, but collided with a Foothill defender under the hoop.

The collision was deemed an offensive foul, and Yoshida's basket was waved off as Amador fans jeered the referee's call. Martinez followed with a 3-pointer to give the Falcons an 8-point lead. As the final minutes ticked away, the Falcons extended their lead to 14 and handed a stunned Amador team the loss.

The Dons' Andy Bocian shot for a game total 31 points, while Foothill's Greenaway shot for 22 points.

Following Wednesday's win, Foothill moved into a three-way tie for first with Amador and San Ramon Valley. But the tie was short-lived after Friday's games when Amador beat Livermore 83-49 and Foothill lost to San Ramon 66-52. Going into this week's games, Amador and San Ramon shared the first-place slot, with Foothill and Monte Vista tied for a close second.

After trailing San Ramon Valley most of the game, the Lady Falcons pulled out a win last Friday in the final minutes, winning 51-48. Liz Chan, who shot for 17 total points, kept the Falcons in the game, assisted by the team's defensive effort.

The Falcons began their run for the win with a Kelly McGlinchy layup, while Christine Shreve and Ngozi Kanu each hit two baskets. McGlinchy shot one from the line to seal the win in the final seconds.

Amador was awarded a match victory over Granada on Thursday night. Senior Joe Bruzzone put a stop to Granada's lead by pinning Harpreet Singh at 154. Vince Bartholdi won an 8-4 decision and Corey Dehl pinned his opponent at 217. Rich Gigliotti dominated his opponent, achieving a technical fall early in the second period. With the score tied at 35-35, the officials used pre-determined tie-breaking criteria and Amador was given the win. Also contributing to the victory were Zak Herzfeldt's crucial pin at 132 and Elliott Ripley's victory at 122.

Amador held first place after playing San Ramon Valley to a 0-0 tie Tuesday night. The Dons controlled most of the game but couldn't score. Jessica Becker, Kathryn Grenter, Christina Buna and Kayla Hansen kept San Ramon off the board, while Sarah Waterman, Laura Adams and Jen Mello pressured the midfield. Bev Mayer, Caitlin MacDonald and Courtney Oschegger kept the San Ramon goalie busy. Senior goalie Erin Murray, who will play for Valparaiso University next year, had two saves.
