Firefighters extinguished flames from a 1999 Honda Accord shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday after its driver, a 17-year-old woman from San Francisco, drove the car onto the median strip at Bernal Avenue and Main Street, rupturing the fuel tank. Traffic Officer Tom Hansen said the driver told him that she was driving west when a beverage cup fell to the floor. As she reached under the dash to retrieve it, the car drifted onto the Bernal divider strip and caught fire. Because she is a juvenile, police would not release her name. The vehicle was a total loss, Hansen said.
