Water polo not just for high school Water polo not just for high school (January 02, 2004)

Stoneridge Water Polo to offer camps for fourth-eighth graders

by Heidi Massie

Now that the high schools have established water polo teams, Stoneridge Water Polo Club is looking to develop younger kids for future teams of Amador Valley and Foothill.

Beginning in February through May, Stoneridge Water Polo will hold training camps for elementary and middle school-aged kids in preparation for summer tournaments.

"Our goal this year is to tap into the huge swimming infrastructure of the community to expose more young swimmers to the sport," said Colin Westrand, club president and Amador Valley coach. "With both Amador and Foothill now at the varsity level, we want to establish the pipeline of athletes for the future."

Joining Westrand in the effort is Foothill's coach Randy Usedom who coaches the club's 16-year-and-under boys teams. Usedom recently completed his first season at Foothill with JV teams.

The club also hopes to qualify their 18-and-under boys and girls for the Junior Olympics in Fort Lauderdale this summer, as well as a return trip to Maui for tournaments.

Boys Basketball

Amador's freshman team defeated American last week in a non-league victory 43-30. The Dons started off slow but came to life in the second quarter to have a commanding lead by halftime that was too much for American to overcome.

The Dons outscored American by 18-4 in the second quarter with Patrick Nelson scoring almost at will with 12 points. Leading 24-11 at the half, the Dons were in total control of the game.

Two outstanding assists in the fourth by Nick Johansen to Eric Luna and a feed by Robbie Flagler to Billy Warm, each for fast break lay-ups, capped the last minute of the game.
Girls Basketball

The JV Lady Dons (7-3) won big over Dublin last week 50-17 despite chilly conditions. Ashlee Stephens scored 9 of the team's 16 points and made three steals in the first quarter. An all-net jump shot by Christine Sobrero and a steal and lay-up by Elizabeth Wolf contributed to the Dons halftime 27-11 lead.

The Dons played tough defense and allowed Dublin only 3 points in the third. Brittany Wolfe and Kiersten Janjigian combined for five block shots, and Sarah Loranca, Stephens and Sophia Herrera had one steal each. Fourth quarter offense from several players sealed the win as Stephanie Zentner scored 6, Elizabeth Wolf 4, Herrera 3, and Stephens 2.
