(January 02, 2004) School communities have been demonstrating a compassionate character trait through the district's Adopt-a-family program. "Nearly every elementary school has some variation of this program, as do many clubs or classes at the middle and high school levels," said Jerri Long, public information officer for the Pleasanton Unified School District. The central office adopted seven families for the holiday, Long said.
In addition to the Adopt-a-family program, students at Harvest Park Middle School have participated in several donation programs this holiday season, including a canned food drive where more than 7,100 cans were collected for Tri-Valley Haven.
Long also reported that the Jaycees hosted a Saturday shopping spree for 29 students; the Masonic Lodge hosted a weekend of fun for about 50 children; the Kiwanis adopted a family; and the Pleasanton Police Department helped distribute donated toys.
