Auditions

‘42nd Street’
The Pleasanton Playhouse is holding auditions for “42nd Street” on Wednesday, Aug. 1, and Thursday, Aug. 2, at 1048 Serpentine Lane, Suite 303. Dance chorus and tapping role auditions are at 7:30 p.m.; everyone else may audition at 8:30 p.m. Callbacks will be Saturday, Aug. 4. Prepare 16 bars of an up tempo song and bring sheet music in your key. An accompanist will be provided. ‘Communicating Doors’
The auditions for the Alan Acykbourn play “Communicating Doors” will be held at 7 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, July 23-24, at the Studio Theater of Pleasanton Playhouse, 1048 Serpentine Lane, Suite 309. The production requires three males and three females, ages 30-50. The audition will consist of reading roles from the script and no appointment is necessary. Harmony Crossroads Women’s Chorus

Citizens’ Police Academy
Enrollment is now open for the fall session. The program creates closer partnerships with the public, explains law enforcement procedures and discusses the importance of public involvement in the policing process. The course will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Thursday nights, beginning Sept. 6 and concluding Dec. 13 with a graduation ceremony. The classes cover a variety of topics. Concerts in the Park
Free concerts in the park are performed every Friday evening through August from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wayside Park on First Street and Neal. On July 13, rock ’n’ roll band, Direct Access, will be performing . On July 20, it will be a second dose of rock ’n’ roll with the Raving Daves.

Art Under the Oaks
This annual art show will feature artist demonstrations and art sales in watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels and more, as well as jewelry, pottery, glass and textile arts. There will also be live entertainment, food and wine, and local wineries will be on hand to provide samples. There will be drawings each hour for Alden Lane gift certificates, and a drawing for the grand prize, a piece of artwork valued at $200, will be held at the end of Sunday. Comedy Nite

Eighth Annual HopFest

Fiesta Mexicana
The 15th annual BBQ fund-raiser will take place Friday, Aug. 10, at the Fairgrounds to help raise money for Pleasanton/Tulancingo Sister City Association. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a no-host bar and a silent auction, followed by a BBQ dinner at 7:30 p.m. After that, a live auction will begin at 8:30 p.m. and then from 8:45-11:30 p.m., dance to “BJ the DJ” with Anytime Music. Paws ’n’ Claws Ball
Valley Humane Society will be holding its third annual ball Saturday, Sept. 8, at Elliston Vineyards, 463 Kilkare Road, Sunol.The fund-raising event will help in the purchase of new property in Pleasanton for a larger facility. The ball is a unique way for humans to share an evening with their favorite canine. There will be a champagne reception with hors d’oeuvres, a sit-down dinner, dancing and live and silent auctions. Amador Livermore Valley Museum
The museum, located at 603 Main St., features rotating exhibits and heritage photographs of the Tri-Valley area. Yesteryear platform exhibits display early lifestyles of the community. The Archives and Reference Library contains photos, maps, manuscripts and oral interviews. Group tours may be scheduled by calling 462-2766. Admission is free.

Film

Modern Marvels: Mount Rushmore
There will be a video presentation at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, in the Meeting Room of the Pleasanton Public Library, 400 Old Bernal Ave. The video tells the story of the sculptor of Mount Rushmore and the dangers and controversy of the project. Cancer Support Group

CPR Classes
The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department offers cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes taught by firefighters. The class teaches basic lifesaving skills, the Heimlich maneuver and preventive signs of a heart attack, stroke and choking. Classes formed based on interest. Cost is $25. Call 454-2375 for details.

Eating Right
Whole Foods Market and the Health Medicine Forum are sponsoring a monthly information lecture and dining series on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Whole Foods Market in San Ramon. ‘Pleasantonopoly’ Summer Reading Program
The Pleasanton Public Library’s 2001 Summer Reading Program runs through Friday, Aug. 10. Children of all ages are invited to register for a free reading game board and enjoy entertainment throughout the summer. Children can keep track of their time spent reading or being read to and win prizes. The library is also compiling a book of children’s art or writing about Pleasanton. Selected artwork will be on public display. Fifteen different versions of Monopoly will be available to “check out” to play at the library with a library card. All programs are free. College Readiness Program
This program is to help high school students improve their reading, writing and study skills. It is open to all Bay Area students entering grades 10-12. Free Dental Screenings

Pleasanton V.I.P. Senior Club
