Aftershocks beat All-Stars Aftershocks beat All-Stars (November 17, 2000)

After losing four straight 1-0 games, the Aftershocks broke through in a big way, exploding for five goals in a 5-1 victory over the All-Stars

After the last game, Coach Ed Meyer had commented, "When we finally score, we'll get a bunch." He was right, in spades.

Jessica Reisfelt took the lid off the goal five minutes into the game. Megan Gomez started the sequence with a centering pass from the right of the goal. Fiona Rivera bumped it over to Reisfelt who made no mistake drilling home the goal. The All-Stars didn't roll over, however, and put pressure on Aftershocks goalie Allie Zachariades.

Zachariades made three big saves before the Aftershocks offense got rolling in earnest. Nicole Romero initiated the action on the second goal by making a pass into the box. Gomez controlled the pass and got her second assist of the game by passing across to Clarissa Nocerino who hit a rocket into the net before goalie Amanda DeMott could react. Kelsey Baxter scored the final goal of the half. Baxter took a long clearing pass from Danielle Payne just across midfield, broke past the defense with a power move and put the ball into the near corner for a 3-0 Aftershock lead.

After going four games without a goal, the Shocks were hungry for more and went to the attack again in the second half. Rivera opened the second half scoring by making a quick tackle at midfield and then dribbling the ball down the right sideline. After cutting into the middle, Rivera's shot was too hot to handle and it deflected off goalie Samantha Harper's hands into the net for a 4-0 lead.

The All-Stars, who started the game with one substitute, were down to 11 players after Ashley Royer went out with a broken toe midway through the second half. With no rest, the All-Stars had trouble getting the ball out of their own end and the Aftershocks amassed nine shots on goal and another seven wide in the second half alone. Despite the near constant pressure the Shocks netted only one more goal. That coming when Payne knocked a left-footed shot to the far post from a Kristina Krause pass.

Kelly Hofmann had an outstanding game in the midfield for the Aftershocks making repeated stops of attempted All-Star clears. The All-Stars managed to get on the board on a nice crossing pass that Kelsey Hall put home as time expired.

Aftershocks drop two heartbreakers Aftershocks drop two heartbreakers (November 17, 2000)

In earlier play, the Pleasanton Aftershocks dropped a pair of 1-0 games last weekend, making it four straight 1-0 losses for the hard luck team. The losses were against the A-Teens and the Avalanche.

In the day's first game, the Aftershocks dropped a tightly played game to the A-Teens. The two teams had played to a 1-1 tie in their first meeting. The Shocks started the game with pressure on the A-Teens that resulted in two easily handled shots on goal.

At the ten-minute mark the A-Teens finally mounted their first two shots of the game. The first was handled easily by Kelsey Baxter, but the attempted goal kick didn't go far and the A-Teens went right back to work. Baxter blocked the second shot, but the rebound got away from her and defender Elisabeth Narum. Maziel Martinez pounced on the loose ball and put it into an open net.

The Aftershocks went right back to work getting good shots from Danielle Payne and Fiona Rivera, but, as has been the story all season long for the Shocks, could not find the net and the scored remained 1-0 at half.

A back forth game opened the second half as both teams had some chances. Allie Zachariades made two nice stops in goal for the Shocks. Halfway through the period the Aftershocks turned up the heat and kept play in the A-Teens end for most of the rest of the half. Their best chance came on Kelly Hofmann's short blast that hit the cross bar.

The Aftershocks outshot the A-Teens 8-2 in the second half, but were turned away by Megan Simpson's great goalie play. Leeann Meyer played well on defense for the Aftershocks.

The second game was almost an instant replay of the first. The Avalanche got a goal 14 minutes into the first half when a long kick bounced into the goal box and drew three defenders. The Avalanche made a quick pass across the goal and, before Goalie Brooke Silva had a chance to react, the ball was in the net. For the rest of the half each team had few good chances.

Both teams had some chances to open the second period. Aftershocks goalie Zachariades made one save and several aggressive plays to turn away the Avalanche.

The Shocks finally got their offense in gear ten minutes into the half and peppered Avalanche goalie Christina Fromson with six shots. But Fromson and the Avalanche defense was able to keep all the Aftershock attempts, eleven shots to six for the Avalanche, out of the net to record the win. Jessica Reisfelt played an excellent game at both ends of the field while Kristina Krause and Megan Gomez were superb stopping Avalanche counters and keeping the ball in the Avalanche side of the field. - Joe Silva
