His son pointed out that Afghanistan has about twice the land area of Viet Nam and U.S. troops never got much beyond 100,000 deployed. That contrasts with the 536,000 troops we had in Viet Nam. As a result, NATO forces lacked the resources to hold territory. That resulted in troops doing very similar missions every quarter. His job was to fly the Chinook with Army squads to villages around the country.
It was good to see Tri-Valley Ventures managing partners Greg Hitchan and Don Garman in the selfie they sent along from Wall Street. They were there to celebrate AEye, the Dublin-based LiDAR company that began trading on Nasdaq last week. Tri-Valley Ventures was an early stage investor in AEye, which makes the detection systems for self-driving vehicles and other applications using sensors plus artificial intelligence. The company was founded in 2013.
How capable is their adaptive LiDAR. The company website included a video that show its optimized off-the-shelf system tracking a 45-caliber bullet that’s moving at about 800 feet per second.

The Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group is pushing hard for the five cities to remain in the same Assembly and Senate districts when redistricting takes effect next year. For the most part, the five communities share similar interests and goals, Mayors annually travel to Washington D.C. to lobby for the area’s priorities.
It’s not quite as good Congress. Rep. Eric Swalwell has Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton and part of San Ramon, while Mark DeSaulnier’s district includes the rest of the San Ramon Valley. The key phase is the area is a community of interest as described in the redistricting law. Of course, that’s much better than when ultra liberals Ron Dellums and Pete Stark split the Tri-Valley area. That got fixed in the 1990s when the Tri-Valley was consolidated into one district.
The meeting for comments on Alameda and Contra Costa counties is today from 3-7 p.m. It can be accessed online at https://www.wedrawthelinesca.org.
Supervisor David Haubert has pulled the community together for key observances.
He organized a multi-faith National Day of Prayer in May and now is sponsoring a 20th anniversary observation of 9-11. It’s set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds Amphitheater.
The details of the program are still being finalized, but I understand the featured speaker has an inspiring story.
In a press release Haubert wrote, “I remember that day vividly. It is hard to imagine that was 20 years ago." He continues, "Our First Responders put their lives on the line that day to save our people. We should always remember those we lost and our heroes on that horrific day."
The observance is open to the public and will be live streamed from a single camera.
Haubert represents the First District, which includes the cities of Dublin, Fremont, Livermore, and the unincorporated communities of Sunol and rural Livermore.
