Tri-Valley city leaders stood up for business and residents

Uploaded: Jul 16, 2020
When Alameda County blindsided business owners and residents alike at 9:12 last Friday night, it was great to see Tri-Valley officials do the right thing.

County officials announced that the state had adjusted its guidelines so outdoor dining, which resumed June 19, would no longer be allowed because the county had not received a variance from the state allowing it to re-open further. Only Alameda and Imperial counties did not have the variance and Alameda County had not asked for one.

You might ask the former acting health chief, Dr. Erica Pan, who left the county to become the state’s top epidemiologist., why the county had not applied. (She’s also the official who allowed golfers to return to the outdoor activities only if they played as singles). The Board of Supervisors voted to apply on Tuesday and the state granted the variance Wednesday.

Instead of kowtowing to the county and state’s flat out unreasonable guideline, our local leaders proceeded with business as usual. That was important because restauranteurs already got killed economically when they had to shutdown operations in 12 hours—that meant donating perishable supplies or dumping them.

This potentially could have done the same thing—a hit that operators could ill-afford.

Moving ahead also was a win for patrons who were able to enjoy another weekend of dining on closed off sections of Main Street in Pleasanton or First Street in Livermore.

Any question of the priorities for radical teachers’ unions, just check out the demands from the United Teachers Los Angeles to re-open schools. The union cited health and safety concerns and then moved on to its other demands.

The letter listed: Privately operated, publicly funded charter schools are shut down; police are defunded; Medicare-for-All—government-run single-player health care is passed; a state-wide wealth tax is implemented and housing for the homeless is fully funded.

You might ask union leaders what most of these have to do with educating students, let alone where the authority for these demands lies. That’s the federal government, the state government and city of Los Angeles. Given the whacky nature of LA politics the defund the police is moving ahead because the City Council voted 12-2 to cut $150 million from the police budget, a move supported by Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Democracy.
What is it worth to you?

Can not believe what they are asking for. It is so over the top and ridiculous. So very sad they don't focus on their jobs to educate our children..... frankly, I don't fully trust their judgment on what they are proposing to educate about. Their agenda vs truth. Pro and con

Tim, please comment on police unions and their contracts and political positions. Here is the Minneapolis police union chief at a Trump rally.

What does that have to do with protecting citizens? Just like what does that have to do with educating our kids.

WHY DO YOU ALWAYS PRESENT ONE PERSPECTIVE? The so-called conservative perspective. Why not look at the issues from all perspectives and publish informative honest opinion blogs?

You are full of it just like Fox News Hannity and all their garbage. I almost thought you were beginning to understand when I read your blog about African Americans a few weeks ago.

Trump has hijacked conservatism, evangelism, the Republican Party and is using the Bible as a prop.

Kevin,

"WHY DO YOU ALWAYS PRESENT ONE PERSPECTIVE?"

Because he's not insane.

"Trump has hijacked conservatism, evangelism, the Republican Party and is using the Bible as a prop."

Good.

Most Republican politicians are NOT conservative and they most certainly are not nationalists (AMERICA FIRST!).
It's time to wipe them out along with liberal/progressive/communist Democrats.

We will be a better nation without them all.

You'll see.

Tim, thanks for blogging on our local leaders brave decision over the weekend. We could use more decisions like this independent from the County leadership which seems to think all areas of the county should be treated the same when clearly the Tri-Valley is different from other sectors of the county. It sure would be nice to be able to get a haircut after 4 months without one at a salon or shop that is allowed to open using safe distancing and masks plus other enhanced health procedures. I've seen zero data showing that a barber or hair stylist using correct procedures is a high risk of spreading the virus.
The LA Teachers Union is yet another example of a group hijacking the pandemic for their selfish political agenda. Sad but not surprising. Keep on blogging.

DKHSK, you are sick in the head and should seek mental assistance.

Thank you Tom for actually behaving as a journalist and not as a member of the fear mongerIng crowd typically seen in the media. Comments that you only provide ‘one side' are inaccurate, and quite honestly liberals always project what they are guilty of. Frankly, the ‘liberal only side' is provided all the time by your other colleagues. So, kudos to you.

As far as unions go, perhaps we should defund the Department Of Education. There would be a start. Our educational standing is very dismal in this state. You mentioned the realities of the LA Teachers Union, many of their demands are in line with the manifesto of BLM. God help us. This year in California, the on-line educational program ‘will be a disaster.' One, the teachers are not prepared for it. I have family members who are teachers in the Tri-Valley area and they inform me the mess they are in. Most teachers are not technologically proficient and need their IT department to help them change their password. So it is going to be a struggle. I feel for the kids, the single parents, and the two parent working families. Oh, and if people have forgotten, we have Title 1 schools. They are truly going to suffer under this program. One half to two thirds will more than likely not show up on the virtual classroom screen.

Lastly, what does your column above have to do with Trump, as depicted by the comments? He didn't get us to this point in time. The DNC did.
