Lots of media coverage as Swalwell calls it quits for 2020 presidential bid

Uploaded: Jul 11, 2019
Congressman Eric Swalwell received more media coverage Tuesday when he cancelled his presidential campaign than he did when he announced or at any other stage.

Swalwell was the first of the Democrats to acknowledge that he did not have the following and fundraising to continue the race. His polling, which barely if ever, reached 1 percent, was dwarfed by his fellow millennial Mayor Pete Buttigieg who topped all Democrats in fundraising in the most recent quarter. Swalwell, thanks to endless cable appearances that ranged from Fox to CNN to MSNBC, certainly had more of a national profile when he entered the race than Mayor Pete, but Democrat voters like what they see in the South Bend mayor.

You could tell Swalwell’s campaign was in trouble when he held a press conference in front of the National Rifle Association headquarters in Washington D.C. So few people attended that you could count them without getting off your fingers and toes. Ending gun violence was Swalwell’s signature issue.

Swalwell’s early decision opens the way for his to run for a fifth term in Congress representing Southern Alameda County. He pulled off a stunning upset back in 2012 when he shocked 40-year incumbent Pete Stark—that happened because of the state’s open primary that set up two Democrats running in the fall (Republican registration in the district was at 18% for the 2018 election, decline to state was about 23% compared to 47% Democrat).

Stark lived in Maryland and rarely touched down in the district, a fact that Swalwell hit hard during the campaign. He received a substantial crossover vote from “anyone but Pete” folks. Until he decided to run for president, Swalwell paid lots of attention to the district, flying home every weekend and routinely holding events to stay in touch.

He had gone to Washington D.C. promising to work across the aisle with Republicans and pushed forward a few bipartisan bills, but found life was better embracing former (and now current) Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He moved into a leadership role with her help and then became an outspoken anti-Trump spokesman on the cable channels.

Presumably, he hoped that national notoriety would translate into support for a presidential bid, a miscalculation he ended Tuesday.

He likely will have a Democrat challenger next March. After Swalwell declared for president, Hayward City Councilwoman Aisha Wahab announced she would run for the seat. She was elected to the council last November and describes herself as a community organizer, former foster child and non-profit director. She says she’s the first Afghan-American woman elected to office in the United States.

Given how far left Swalwell has moved, she will find it a challenge to run to his left in what is a safe Democrat district.

Open primary? Isn't that what they have in Communist countries? Alameda county is always gonna be a Dem against a Dem...some choice...even when another party sneaks in. The Republican party needs to come back to CA...there are a lot of good Dems that are not part of this radical trend. Being a liberal does not mean being a radical.

I want to compliment Tim Hunt (author of the article) for writing a pretty fair assessment of Swalwell's "political path", so to speak. When he was running against Stark, Swalwell positioned himself as more of a centrist, middle-of-the-road type, against the farther-left Stark. But since then, Swalwell has moved consistently farther left. It's hard to tell what his real beliefs are, at this point, since his every move seems entirely motivated by political expediency. But certainly over the past two years he has been all about two "issues". Being anti-Trump, and being anti-gun ownership. Maybe he will "evolve" yet again, in his upcoming run for Congress....

C R Mudgeon. He won't.
It's just too bad there's no one willing to run against any incumbent democrat.

Eric Swalwell had stated that he would not run again for our district because he was doing his bid for President. I believe he is very disingenuous, ineffective, and should move on to something else.

The bigger question to the bigger problem in California is: when are we going to start to elect people that want to 'do better' rather than 'feel better' about themselves. This state is in deep trouble, and it is going to require leaders that care about the 'middle class' rather than people 'from other countries here illegally.' We need to elect leaders that will put the clothes back on Gavin Newsome and turn this state around. 'Producers' are leaving this state by hundreds of thousands each year and the 'takers' are moving in and demanding free stuff. California taxpayers can't continue to empty their pocketbooks just to provide South American a free ride. We have 'woke' to a sinking ship, but the music is still playing so it feels alright.

Stop hating Trump and start loving California. I was born here, my children are here, my grandchildren are here, and I would like to die here. But if this continues, I may be force to find another state that appreciates our values. Time will tell.

Two thumbs up, Jake. My family came here in 1895 and I love this state and don't want to leave. Half of my relatives have already left but I still have hope that the rubber band will snap soon and the radical left will be replaced by normalcy. I can only hope. I own homes in Henderson and Reno so its easy for me to go...but I'm not leaving without a fight.

Eric Swalwell is a shameless, self-indulgent representative sent to Congress to represent District 15, California.

Swalwell has served nearly four terms in Congress and is running again to be reelected in District 15, California.

Swalwell first eight years in Congress, he has not authored, has not passed a sngle piece of legislation.

Swalwells salary is $174,000.00 year, Swalwells guaranteed life time pensions $139,000.00 yearly, That is not the half of it.

Swalwell has tax payer expense account along with a lot of other perks, free mailing privileges, tax deduction for room and board, free air flights, all of which total more then $6,000,000.00 yearly. That is a conservative estimate. When I researched all of the perks, they were never ending I got tired and rounded it up at $6 million.

As long as the liberal voting mass in District 15 continues with their pattern voting for members of their liberal party representing District 15, Swalwell will continue on shamelessly, selfindugent free wheeling at tax payer expense, bringing nothing back to the District that sent him to Congress.

@Michael Austin

So very true regarding Swalwell's perks and with all that he is in debt. Can't even pay off his student loans. This from a guy who wants to manage our taxpayer funds.

@Cholo, Molo, and Bolo

You represent another first regarding California: we are last in education. You prove that point. Secondly, I feel a lack of security in your Sanctuary Cities.

Wombat:

Please identify what legislation Congressman Erick Swalwell authored, that passed in the house, that passed in the senate, and was signed into law by the President of the United States?

Do not list bills that other members of Congress authored, which Congressman Erick Swalwell jumped on as cosponsor.

When I first started voting in the 90s, I was a democrat , I voted for “end illegal immigration" Bill who embraced welfare reform and put up with “down with urban super predators" Hilary.

A 90s centrist Democrat like myself found myself the object of ridicule and somehow now a bigot.

Go figure. I don't know where the current crop of voters get their world view but it's not from parents with American values.

When someone starts off a debate by accusing one of being a racist, you know that they have no grasp of the issue at hand.

When everyone is a racist, nobody is a racist.

YAWN...!!! Such a tired and overused accusation that's lost all meaning.

The "squad" has exposed the fundamental modern democrat platform: raise taxes; raparations; live birth abortion; globalism; un-fettered immigration (no borders); socialism/communism.

Yep...that's a winning formula.

Y'all have lost the next election. The house will revert back to the Republicans and you'll get 4 more of the most miserable years you'll ever experience under Trump.

You deserve it.

@Wombat... I mean Dingbat.

From Dingbat:

“He (President Trump) also falsely accused Ilhan Omar of “speaking about how wonderful al-Qaeda is" in his latest racist rant."

Dingbat submitted that quote from Vox to portray Ilhan Omar as a victim. A victim? Surely you jest. But let's take a little walk down fact avenue.

Regarding the Covington Catholic kids, here is what Omar said:

1.The boys were protesting a woman's right to choose & yelled 'it's not rape if you enjoy it' ... (archived)

2.They were taunting 5 Black men before they surrounded Phillips and led racist chants ...

3. Sandmann's family hired a right wing PR firm to write his non-apology.

All lies. But why stop here? Aside from being a liar, let's see what Omar said about Israel, shall we?

Omar said:

"Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel." Twitter feed [4] (Nov 16, 2012)

Omar later regretted making this tweet, describing it as 'unfortunate'.[4]

She described it as unfortunate. Wow. Apparently Dingbat enjoys running cover for people like Omar.

Whoops, almost forgot about this one...

After Hamas had launched rockets at Israel and murdered Israelis while wounding scores of other Israelis, duly elected Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) attacked Israel once again, blaming Israel for shooting “protesters" and insisting that Israel was occupying Gaza.

And more...

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) trivialized the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history in a speech she gave at an event for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) " which the United Arab Emirates has designated as a terrorist organization.

When speaking about the 9/11 terror attacks, which killed approximately 3,000 American citizens, Omar described the attacks as "some people did something."

Yeahhhh... Some people did something... Wow.

Hey Dingbat, just out of curiosity, do you support Antifa too? Just curious.

@ Wombat

From Swalwell:

"I stand by what I said about seeing evidence of collusion. If he has a problem with that, he can sue me. And I promise you I would win in court," Swalwell doubled down.

Where is this "evidence" that Swalwell speaks of Wombat? Seems to me you turn a blind eye to the truth. I guess the Mueller report isn't good enough?

Here's another lie from Swalwell:

Eric Swalwell embarrassed himself when he attempted to express no knowledge about who radio show host and NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch is. Check it out...

Dana Loesch

Would you limit the ban and confiscation to semi-auto rifles or would you extend the ban to semi-auto handguns...? //twitter.com/RepSwalwell/status/1063535667249012736 ...

Rep. Eric Swalwell
?
@RepSwalwell

She's not lying. We should ban assault weapons by buying them back or restricting them to ranges/clubs. #EnoughIsEnough Web Link ...

Here's another"

""Donald Trump works on Russia's behalf," Swalwell said. "When he meets with Vladimir Putin he won't tell the country what was said and he essentially took the notes from the interpreter."

Wombat covers for liars.
