Destination ImagiNation
A team of six sophomore students from Amador Valley and Foothill high schools won second-place honors at the Global Finals of Destination ImagiNation held in Knoxville, Tenn., from May 27-30. Team members Naveed Akhter, Sachin Dhar, Preston Hedrick and Marisa Victor from Foothill, and Hunter Laine and Arielle Siegel from Amador Valley were supervised by team manager Elizabeth Flores. The group created a water purifying machine by causing a reaction with Coke, Mentos and salt. In another challenge the team took eighth place with a structure of newspaper and glue that was able to hold 500 pounds. Competitors were 1,032 teams from 15 countries, which each used critical thinking and problem-solving skills to put together a winning design.
