Kyle Raymond Manning

Pleasanton resident Kyle Manning died unexpectedly Sunday in his sleep at the age of 23.

He was born April 12, 1987. He graduated from Amador Valley High School in 2005 and from Arizona State in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business. He recently moved to Sacramento where he was employed as an Associate Application Consultant. He was known for his knowledge and expertise with computer technology. His family and friends knew him as "The Professor."

He is survived by his parents Stephen and Mary Ann; siblings Kristie, Karie and Ryan; his grandmother Midge; and uncles, aunts and cousins. He is also survived by his soul mate, Allison Bertea. A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night. Agathering will be held for friends and family to share their memories and thoughts from 5-9 p.m. today at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St. in Pleasanton. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Seton, 4001 Stoneridge Drive in Pleasanton. Donations may be made to the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation.

James Eudell Pierce Jr.

James Eudell Pierce Jr. died June 3 at the age of 81.

He was born March 24, 1929, in San Angelo, Texas. He was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia M. Pierce. He is survived by his son James and daughter Janice; four siblings in Texas; stepdaughters Debbie Carlund and Marla Robbins; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St., Pleasanton. Donations may be made to either brain or breast cancer research.

Phyllis Ann Shields

Phyllis Ann Shields, a six-year resident of Pleasanton, died June 4 at the age of 63.

She was born April 30, 1947, to Fred and Frances Tyler of Richmond. She attended St. Cornelius Catholic Elementary and graduated from Harry Ells High School in 1965. Shortly after graduation, she met her future husband Art Shields Sr.; they were married Oct. 18, 1965. They eventually settled in the Pinole-Hercules area where they raised three boys.

Mrs. Shields had a 24-year career in the judicial system, most notably serving as the Deputy Courtroom Clerk at Bay Municipal Court located in San Pablo and later in Richmond. After her retirement in 1993, she spent her time doing arts and crafts; her friends' homes have the treasures she made, including tole painted objects, fabric antique dolls, quilts and ornaments. She also spent countless hours gardening. She loved to travel and take road trips with her family. She also enjoyed trips with her husband to motorcycle rallies and collecting jewelry from those destinations. She and her husband moved to Pleasanton in 2004 to be closer to their grandchildren and attend their sporting events and school functions.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Art Shields Sr.; sister Karen Behrens and husband Lee of Fairfax, Iowa; sister Sandra Eaves and husband John of Anderson, Calif.; children Arthur (Artie) Shields Jr. and wife Theresa of Pleasanton, David Shields of Pleasanton, Allan Shields and wife Chrissy of Danville; and seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Fred and Gary.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Seton, 4001 Stoneridge Drive in Pleasanton, to be followed by a gathering at the Danville Station Clubhouse, 1320 Van Patten Drive in Danville.

My mom AKA. Granny was the most beautiful careing loveing thoughtful lady I have ever known. She was loved so very much by all. Anyone who ever met her liked her. Mom I have so much to say, I think about you every day. I'm am so proud to say I am your son. I love you I still have brandys dog tag on my key chain and her little stuffed lion " fluzy ". Give her a hug for me and take her for walks all the time it's safe up there. I want to end this letter to my mom with a little story.

Once I was asked if I coul have one wish what would i wish for?

I thought about it long and hard and replied. I wish every one had a mother and father like I have. They asked why? And I told them this. If every one had a mother an father like me, the world would be by far a Better place. Every one would know what it feels like to be loved unconditionally. to have some one who cared so much about you that any decision they had to make concearning you your entire life was the one that was in your best interest. No matter what. Every one would know the feeling of having a family who loved them.

So many people in the world today grow up never knowing what being a family is. Or even the feeling of being loved.

I feel like I've won the lottery ever time think about my mom or see my dad. "pops" I feel so blessed to be apart of this entire family.

Granny you have always been loved and will be missed so very much.
