She was born April 30, 1947, to Fred and Frances Tyler of Richmond. She attended St. Cornelius Catholic Elementary and graduated from Harry Ells High School in 1965. Shortly after graduation, she met her future husband Art Shields Sr.; they were married Oct. 18, 1965. They eventually settled in the Pinole-Hercules area where they raised three boys.

She also spent countless hours gardening. She loved to travel and take road trips with her family. She also enjoyed trips with her husband to motorcycle rallies and collecting jewelry from those destinations. She and her husband moved to Pleasanton in 2004 to be closer to their grandchildren and attend their sporting events and school functions.
