Smoking tree raises suspicions

Pleasanton police are investigating what may be a case of arson after part of a tree was burned May 1.

Firefighters were called out to 8200 Regency Drive at around 2 a.m., where they found the tree smoking, said Sgt. Jim Knox.

He noted that he could not say for certain what happened to the tree.

"It's been assigned to the arson investigator for follow up," Knox said. "Firefighters indicated it possibly was. There was a can of accelerant there."

No structures were damaged, and Knox said firefighters found only smoke and no actual fire.
