Letter: Council--preserve our rights

Bookmark and Share
Dear Editor,

Investments do not guarantee profit. The Lin family chose to invest in Pleasanton's southeast hills, even though land speculation is a very risky investment.

Our democratic process allows Pleasanton residents the opportunity to vote on whether we believe that the Lin's development proposal negatively impacts our city. But instead of respecting the rights of 5,000 citizens who signed a petition, and are legally entitled to voice their opinions through voting, the Lins are trying to eliminate their investment risk, and guarantee huge personal profits, by invalidating our democratic process. Land speculation/ownership does not entitle them to profit and it certainly does not give them the right to deny our First Amendment rights.

There have been many referendums in Pleasanton...and that process has been considered fair and legal until this landowner and developer, (with very deep pockets), decided to sue our city. We must encourage our City Council to courageously stand up and support the Oak Grove referendum appeal. This appeal has nothing to do with houses or hilltop development. It is about safeguarding the democratic rights of Pleasanton citizens, defending the integrity of our city, protecting the future viability of our referendum process and preserving the right of everyone in Pleasanton to vote.

If we can't count on our Mayor and City Council to support and preserve our democratic rights, then we clearly elected the wrong people.

Yea, preserve our rights by stepping on the rights of others. Real democratic!
