Letter: Provincial dragons
Dear Editor,
For a while, I thought Pleasanton was becoming more cosmopolitan. When I saw a group of people shout down the idea of having a forum about Iraq and enforce the idea that City Council meetings are only about sewers and plots of land and never about our collective cultural progress, I snapped out of my delusion. And, as time grinds on by, I've come to believe that a large hunk of this community is truly provincial, classist, racist, and many enjoy using religion as their bully pulpit. I envision Pleasantonians clutching their Nordstrom bags and waving tiny flags as they proudly slide into the next dark age.
Even the movie critic this week seemed comfortably stuffy, pointing out in practically the same breath that the movie "Juno" was "overwritten" by an ex-stripper. Why was it necessary to point out that the "overwriter" was a former stripper? It makes me sad to think how delicious it must've felt, knowing how easily that imagery would slide down the gullet of the provincialists in our city, feeding that particular dragon. But, as she pointed out, "that's why I get the big bucks." Right...

My goodness, how can you stand living among all those provincial, classist and racist people in your community. You sound Soooo Cosmopolitan!
I enjoy a good Cosmopolitan myself, especially after a rough day of shopping at Nordstroms and Flag waving! Go Mitt!

Posted by Jerry, a resident of the Oak Hill neighborhood, on Jan 16, 2008 at 12:33 am If anyone wishes to have an "Iraq Forum", or any other forum, why don't they hold it at a location such as the city library, or other such location, that can be used at no charge. If I'm not mistaken, two council members have stated they have no interest in discussing their position on the Iraq situtation at such a forum. If everyone that has an axe to grind were allowed to have a forum before the city council, where would the line be drawn. Pick any number of issues floating around this city - should supporters/opponents be allowed to hold the same type forum or is this only reserved for select groups. Also, pretty strong language concerning "a large hunk of this community". When did it become necessary to place labels on those that may disagree with ones points of view.
