Empty storefronts an eyesore

Watching the efforts this week to rescue the country's beleaguered financial system, I sensed a similar need on a much smaller--but still important--scale here in Pleasanton. Walking and driving down Main Street and through the Rosewood Pavilion near Interstate 580 and Santa Rita Road, I've been troubled by the growing number of empty storefronts and papered-over windows of retail businesses that are closed. Silver Palate restaurant at 680 Main St. is one of the most recent, with Cattelan's Antique Market across the street at 719 Main St. now empty for several months and no prospective tenant in sight. Thanks to Alexis Gass of Clover Creek, the dreary darkened windows at Cattelan's have been decorated with colorful items that can be purchased at Clover Creek. Next door at 725 Main, nothing's happened to the fenced-off dirt lot where the Union Jack Pub stood before the old building was demolished. At the time, contractor Mike O'Callaghan had a deal with a Cuban restaurant, but that fell through and he's waiting for the out-of-town family that owns the property to agree on another tenant before he can start building.

There are more flu vaccines now than have ever been produced, according to Art Woo, program director of Sutter infusion and pharmacy services. Fear of shortages has diminished as health officials encourage people to get vaccinated early in the flu season.

Back in 1934, when the financial crisis on Wall Street was even worse than it is now, local voters nevertheless went to the polls and agreed to form the East Bay Regional Park District and to tax themselves to finance it. It's time to do it again. Measure WW, which is on the Nov. 4 ballot, is a $500-million bond measure that seeks to extend Measure AA that voters approved 20 years ago. That measure, which was passed in 1988 and is due to expire at the end of this year, raised $225 million for the park district to connect trails, purchase open space, restore creeks and build recreation areas and new parks. But the district needs continued funding to meet the needs of a growing East Bay population and also to more aggressively protect open space against encroachment. Measure WW will do that by continuing to provide needed funds. It would extend but not raise the $10 ceiling on every $100,000 of assessed valuation on properties in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. No one would pay a higher rate than was approved 20 years ago, a rate that is actually lower than the one voters approved in the midst of the Great Depression.

Front yards again a place for political signs

Political campaign signs are starting to dot the Pleasanton landscape as candidates and their supporters work the precincts, posting signs wherever they can to get the candidate's name out front in as many front yards as possible. The most visible sign I've seen is Steve Brozosky's, which has his name and "Mayor" in big bold black type against a strikingly yellow background. It's simple, you know what he's running for and you know it's his sign from a block away. And he has them all over town. I haven't seen any for Mayor Jennifer Hosterman yet, but I'm sure her campaign team will be placing them in front yards and on fence posts within the next few days.

Neal School litigation Sinks High School Gym Expansions

School Superintendent John Casey has informed residents that the long over due gym expansion at Foothill and Amador High Schools are on hold due to lack of funds.

A closer examination reveals that the litigation with Signiture properties, which will cost Pleasanton Unified School District between 3 and 6 million dollars, has crowded out the gym expansion plan. The funds used for litigation have come directly out of the capital improvement portion of the budget.

Meanwhile, the board is still considering a second appeal of the most recent ruling in favor of Signiture Properties and is likley on the hook for several million dollars in legal fees owed to the builder.

One possible way to recoup some of the losses would be to sell the Neal School property, but this would require the board to admit failure and move on.

Sixteenth molestation charge added against Germain

The East Bay Regional Parks District was formed during the Great Depression, so it's no secret that despite the similarly fragile state of the economy, its members are hoping people will recognize as they did in the 1930s the importance of preserving land for future generations.
On the Nov. 4 ballot will be Measure WW, a $500-million bond measure that seeks to extend Measure AA, which was passed in 1988 and runs out this year. Cashing in on Kolln

A majority on the Planning Commission went into last night's meeting convinced they wouldn't support the installation of an ATM on the historic Kolln Hardware building at Main and Division streets downtown. It's Old West elegance, complete with the distinguishing cupola that is almost as recognizable as the neon Pleasanton sign, has been restored for the past four years by owner Bud Cornett.

20-year-old man arrested for placing dead animals in Dublin High lockers

Laptop Program and Porn

Does anyone have any advice on keeping porn away from kids? If one or more of your children are in the laptop program at one of Pleasanton schools, they have a laptop computer. I went to Apple and asked how to prevent the kids from viewing porn, and they didn't have anything that made sense. For example, you can enter the websites your children can view, and everything else will be blocked. That's not a practical option for obvious reasons.
