Research by David C. Barker of the University of Pittsburgh and David H. Bearce of the University of Colorado found the following: Belief in the biblical end-times is a motivating factor behind right-wing resistance to curbing climate change.
"[T]he fact that such an overwhelming percentage of Republican citizens profess a belief in the Second Coming (76 percent in 2006, according to our sample) suggests that governmental attempts to curb greenhouse emissions have encountered stiff resistance, and will continue to encounter stiff resistance, even if every Democrat in the country wants to curb them," Barker and Bearce wrote in their study, which will be published in the June issue of Political Science Quarterly.
There's nothing terribly surprising or unusual about Second Coming believers thinking that the world will be ending any minute now, and on their watch. Doomsaying has been a staple of history. But, hey, what about all the Republican worry-warts who profess deep misgivings about the federal deficit affecting future generations? Well, that doesn't count, I guess. It's one thing to dump toxic poisons into the atmosphere; it's quite another to create deficit spending for meals on wheels, food stamp, and children's nuitrition programs.
And the logic? Well, see, WE don't have to take care of the earth because it's all going to end soon anyway. And, on the same 'reasoning', so we shouldn't be spending MY tax money on impoverished children either because, hey, it's going to end sooner than anyone believes anyway. So, let's spoil the landscape while living it up! And let the little children suffer, because theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven once the millenarian saints come down to slay the guy God/Christ/Whomever didn't have the competence to get along with in the first place.
