Mandatory Community Service

Original post made by Kathy L, Stoneridge, on Oct 26, 2008

Pleasanton High Schools have a mandatory community service program which the high school children must complete. I think this is a wonderful program that instills social responsbility into their character. I am an avid volunteer who has had the pleasure of working side by side with these children and I wanted to share some insight which I've experienced.

First, all the children I've had a pleasure of volunteering with have shown respect to others that they work beside and also to the people who they are serving. It doesn't matter if they are elderly, or if they are serving those less fortunate a hot meal or putting together the school lunch boxes. They go above and beyond what is expected of them & are well mannered and actually seem to enjoy volunteering. It's been a pleasure working with them whatever the location or task.

As parents you should be commended in teaching your children social responsability and excellent manners. It is especially important in this day and age to promote social responability and giving back to the community. The economy is tight, the number of people who need these food based programs have almost doubled these past 6 months. The government is cutting fundings and as a result it is becoming apparent that we need to all pitch in & go the extra mile, give back to the community wherever possible. I look forward to seeing more of you out these in the community pitching in. The community thanks you too.

My daughter did her community service through the Tri-Valley YMCA this past summer. She had a GREAT experience and while she was the one who provided service to others, she was the true winner! She saw how fun and rewarding it could be to give back to our community. Thanks YMCA and thanks Amador Valley High School. Together you have had a tremendous impact on my daughter!

My daughter did her community service through the Y, too, and she had so much fun! She loved the kids, loved the staff and never once complained about having to "work." She definitely learned a lot about herself but she also learned the value of giving back.

We love the Tri-Valley YMCA and feel very fortunate to have a strong Y in our community.
