This weekend, the city was covered with campaign signs in illegal locations (i.e., city property).
Cheryl, who is running for mayor had her political signs all over Delucci Park on First Street. She did exactly the same thing two years ago when she ran.
Erlene, running for council, put up a huge sign on the city property at Bernal and Vineyard and a bunch of smaller signs on Bernal in the public right of way, near the church.
Those were just the signs I saw in my short drive today.
Somebody told me that they thought this might have been done by union members of the local fire department. I know they have put signs up in illegal locations before for the candidates the union endorses. I hope somebody can catch them in the act and have them suspended without pay for knowingly breaking the local law.
If the candidates, or their campaign, are putting signs in obviously illegal locations, they should be ashamed of themselves but I wish there was something that could be done. The city can issue fines but I have never heard of that being done. I say, if the city finds an illegal sign, they call the campaign main number and give them one hour of resolve it. If they don't, fine them. And then keep fining them for each additional hour the sign is up. It is not fair to those who follow the law to have others disregard it with seemingly no repercussions.
