Local Candidates Breaking Laws Already
Original post made by Jill on Sep 8, 2012
This weekend, the city was covered with campaign signs in illegal locations (i.e., city property).
Cheryl, who is running for mayor had her political signs all over Delucci Park on First Street. She did exactly the same thing two years ago when she ran.
Erlene, running for council, put up a huge sign on the city property at Bernal and Vineyard and a bunch of smaller signs on Bernal in the public right of way, near the church.
Those were just the signs I saw in my short drive today.
Somebody told me that they thought this might have been done by union members of the local fire department. I know they have put signs up in illegal locations before for the candidates the union endorses. I hope somebody can catch them in the act and have them suspended without pay for knowingly breaking the local law.
If the candidates, or their campaign, are putting signs in obviously illegal locations, they should be ashamed of themselves but I wish there was something that could be done. The city can issue fines but I have never heard of that being done. I say, if the city finds an illegal sign, they call the campaign main number and give them one hour of resolve it. If they don't, fine them. And then keep fining them for each additional hour the sign is up. It is not fair to those who follow the law to have others disregard it with seemingly no repercussions.

Jill, I couldn't agree with you more! Cheryl knows where the signs can and can't go. But I guess she thinks the rules don't apply to her. This is the union firefighters at work for her who also know where the signs are not allowed. And DeMarcus has 4 x 8 foot signs up around town--That's the size of a sheet of plywood. (Jim Tong must have made a large donation to her campaign to pay for these!) Is there not some rule about the maximum area of a sign? DeMarcus's signs are also on public property--she should know better also.
I hope someone from the City is reading this and does something about it to set the tone so that we're not subjected to signs all over the place for the next 2 months!!

Obviously the union fire fighters have a lot of time on their hands. I have stated repeatedly that fire science demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that we could get by with no fire dept at all, simply borrowing the schlubs from Livermore whenever there's an overheated toaster or microwave. Structures aren't made of wood anymore, so nothing burns. It's a fact.

You might be right about the Fire Department, they are hanging around 2 of the candidates like stick on you know what. Don't the firemen have a clue how bad that looks? If they get elected, the council will determine their next pay raise or pension. Amazing that the city manager allows this to happen.
