Police Officers Abuse Disability
Original post made by taxpayer on Jul 24, 2012
"currently the department has nine officers out on short-term disability. That means, including the management staff, almost 20 percent of the normal staff are unavailable. The department averages between 3 and 5 officers out on short-term disability so this is an unusual situation."
No rocket science here. While on disability the CA tax code makes 100% of their income fully tax free. Most departments do not require the officers to use personal sick time for this so the tax free income is virtually unlimited. If they can scam this into a disability retirement then their income will be tax free for life. And remember, their retirement income will be 90% of the final highest year of pay if they have worked 30 years and are 50 years old. That tax free pension will increase every year and will most likely include free medical benefits for life.
Lest you feel sorry for the poor injured officers, once that disability retirement is locked in by the hearing, it can NEVER be challenged. Remarkable numbers of previously "disabled" public safety officers make miraculous recoveries as soon as the disability is granted.
And you -- the sucker taxpayer -- will pay for that pension for as long as they live.

Legit injuries or not - I never understood why public safety (police and fire( was exempt from paying taxes on short term disability - aka "4850 time". With bigger paychecks while off the job, there is even less incentive to get back to work.
Also, as in any job sector people start to miss work when they aren't happy. I wouldn't be surprised if morale is low.

Two many fakers. We dont need most of them. 20% reduction? Who cares? Glorafied meeter maids is all they are. Unless they get shot, I say let them wither away in the hospital in all there fakery. This is typical ploy by liberal diseased public employs and there supporters.

Pro-law, you made a point that I left out. It is not just the PPD doing this. It is every "public safety officer" in the state of CA. Cops, firefighters, CHP, prison guards.
CA law overrules Federal law regarding making the pensions tax free. Grey Davis crammed 3% at 50 on us without public comment or votes. We need to pass an initiative to make it 2% at 65 with the employee making 100% of the pension contributions. Tax free pensions need to be stopped, it only contributes to this abuse. Tax free 4850 time needs to stop. In the private sector, only the amount of income from SDI (currently about $1,000 per week, maximum) is tax free and that is because the employee pays for the insurance policy via SDI tax deductions on the paycheck. Public safety officers get full salaries, full benefits accruals (including pensions) and they collect it all tax free.
What incentive could they possibly have to return to work? Full salary, no taxes, sit at home -- full salary, pay taxes, do your job. It would be interesting to know how long these guys have been on their taxpayer funded vacations.
