We live across the street from WG Elementary and down the street from the Post Office -25 mph zone w/speed alert signs on the pole in front of the neighbors house. 2 questions: 1.)When PPD put a cop (1-2x per year)down a side street the average is 3 tickets in 20-25 mins. I though our new(ish) Police Chief was going to make speeding a priority and, 2.) I would have thought that areas/streets around schools, particularly when there is a thoroughfare, would be a great place to explore the idea of speed bumps to slow down traffic (if the sign is correct, drivers have been clocked as fast as 50 mph, 35-40 is fairly routine) If the City had $550K to remove round-abouts that were a challenge on Vineyard, surely they have the money to install speed bumps around town.
Good idea. People have been driving way to fast along these streets.
I'm a 53 year resident on Touriga Drive. We met with the City a few years ago about the speed issue and at that time we did NOT want speed humps. They are ugly, hard on vehicles, and might affect house value for the homes they are placed in front of. We were told they are also placed close together, not spaced out like we first thought before going to the meeting. I would love to hear from residents of Crellen who have to drive over those humps daily or live in front of one on if they would do it again?
We asked for more 25MPH signs (which we received)and the electronic speed awareness sign (we only received one, coming DOWN Touriga. It would have been nice to have one placed for traffic going UP the Touriga.
The speeding is NOT solely associated with traffic to the school. Speeders are racing up & down the street at all times and on weekends. As twice a day dog walkers, we have noticed MANY speeders turning left into the housing area just up from the Touriga/Palamino intersection.
In talking to some of my neighbors, we would like to see a stop sign placed on Touriga, either Touriga/Crellen or Touriga/Palamino. Touriga/Palamino would solve the problem of pedestrians crossing at that intersection and not being seen because of parked cars on Touriga at that corner and the curve of the road that prevents clear view for safe crossing. A BIG SAFETY CONCERN. We already had the City paint the corner red, but the curve is so great it didn't help much.
We also need a electronic speed awarenes sign that shows your speed going UP Touriga.

I would encourage the Weekly when writing about speeding in residential areas, to remind drivers to monitor their own speeds. No one likes speeders on their street as it makes it more dangerous for residents and others walking, biking, jogging and other activities. This public safety idea costs the City of Pleasanton and the tax payers nothing.

Removing the roundabouts was the biggest waste of money ever. I can't believe the city spent over half a million to appease "inconvenienced" residents. Roundabouts do work because they make you really slow down when necessary.
I wish there would be many more of them.
Agree with Jim. Once the locals get use to roundabouts they are a lot better at moving traffic than 4 way stops. In Europe they would have horrendous traffic back-ups if they did not have roundabouts.
Question - why does Fremont still have school buses but not Pleasanton? Why can Fremont school administrators budget for this traffic mitigating convenience but Pleasanton administrators cannot find the money?
It is so bizzare to watch moms in giant SUVs drive their little child to school, one after another after another turning left from Valley onto Hopyard on the way to Donlon elementary. All the while you are thinking, isn't this why school buses were invented, duh!
I hope they don't add to the ugliness and stupidity of them by painting "HUMP AHEAD" all over the road like in Castro Valley.
I lived near the ones in CV for a time and they did not improve conditions. You could still go faster then the speed limit over them and then there were the people whom I think believed that the faster you go over them the less you feel them.

My friends and neighbors use the term "undulatons ahead." Admittedly, however, there always exists the possibility that the little people won't know what that means. Usually gating off one's community is the better bet.

Vintage Hills school traffic would be reduced greatly if Ruby Hill provided a bus for its students instead of sending thousands of cars into the Vintage Hills neighborhood. Imagine the howls of protest if that many cars went through Ruby Hill twice a day. Speed bumps on Touriga and Palamino put the burden on Vintage Hills residents. But the bulk of the problem originates in Ruby Hill. If they can afford a gate, they can afford a bus, which also would save them a lot of trips.
Trust me folks, speed humps don't work! Just stand in my driveway for 5 minutes and you'll see what I'm talking about. They are ugly and ineffective. Drivers either drive straight down the middle of the street to try and line up their wheels in the openings or they just go over them at the usual 35 - 40 mph. Please don't add any more to the neighborhood; a total waste of money. What does work? More patrolling and handing out tickets, not warnings. Look what it did for Vineyard Ave, btw First and Bernal Sts. It slowed it down and became known as a speed trap.
We live on Arbor Drive which connects with Touriga for access to the rest of Pleasanton. I have observed this problem and can empathize with those who live on Touriga and are endangered by the traffic. One simple solution might be to simply ban left turns from Vineyard Avenue onto Touriga during the school commute hours. The simplest route would then be to travel to Bernal, which is designed for that heavier traffic. A related issue is the routine violation of stop signs on side streets entering Touriga such as Crellin and Palamino. Let's put our heads together and see if we can solve this problem without adding those speed bumps that seem to merely label the neighborhood as less desirable without doing much to "calm" the traffic.
To Rick: If PUSD had delivered on the Neal School, the people of Ruby Hill wouldn't have to drive to Vintage Hills at all...
Funny that when your neighborhood is affected by speeders you all want the police to come out and write tickets. However, when you speed in MY neighborhood, the police are just "harassing the taxpayers" by citing speeders.
If the residents decide on round-abouts, make sure they aren't like the idiotic one on Kamp Dr. at Rheem Dr. Coming south on Kamp it makes sense, but going north it is just a straight shot, and NO ONE knows what to do. Go for the use of stop signs, and pedestrian crosswalks with flashing lights (though I often notice people NOT stopping at the one on Santa Rita in front of Safeway and rarely do people stop at the one on Mohr and Iron Horse Pkwy).
I have seen speed humps that are wide and fairly short in height. If you roll over them at 15 miles per hour, you hardly notice them. You go over 25 and the front and back of your car bottoms out. Pretty funny to watch. We could sit in lawn chairs and enjoy the show
I think Lisa's suggestion of at least one extra Stop sign on Touriga is a good one. At Crellin or Palomino?
An extra Stop sign close to the intersection with Tawny might make it easier for children trying to cross there. I think a Stop sign would be safer than a pedestrian crossing, because drivers would then be in the habit of stopping, whether pedestrians were waiting to cross or not. (It seems to me that the pedestrian crossing on Bernal between Kottinger and Palomino is an accident waiting to happen, because drivers rarely have to stop there. Thus when pedestrians ARE there, drivers sometimes don't notice them until it's almost too late.)
But I have just one request:-
Please, PLEASE, I beg you - no more traffic lights!
Their number has increased so dramatically in recent years that at one point I even started wondering whether some bigwig in the planning department had purchased shares in a traffic light company!
MrsJJJ: AGREED! The traffic lights can be maddening! There are certain times of day that it can take 25 minutes for what should be a 10-12 minute drive! I avoid certain lights like the one at West Las and Hopyard. Oh that light is crazy long.
I have often wondered who let H.C. Elliot put in the race track called Touriga? If it had more curves speeders would have to slow down more. Oh well,' water over the dam".
Dear Neighbors on Touriga,
Be very clear on what you are asking for at the meeting on Thursday. If I wasn't out of town, I would come myself to tell you that speed humps don't work. Trust me, you don't want these ugly things on your street along with an extra Speed Bump sign in your yard. Stand on the corner of Crellin and Montevino (the upper part of Crellin Rd.) and watch how fast the speeders (and I'm not talking just teenagers here) take these humps up AND down Crellin Rd. All speed humps do is divert traffic to another street for many drivers and the same speeders still speed as per usual. Also take a look at the planter boxes installed on Montevino and Crestablanca as a slow-down measure. Interesting how this more attractive neighborhood solution was installed for these homes and Crellin got concrete humps. I agree there is a problem with speeding in our neighborhood (and many others) but installing speed humps is not the solution. They are ugly, ineffective and detract from the beauty of the neighborhood (think Oakland/Berkeley neighborhoods) if that's really what you want.
