Hart 6th-grade girls help leukemia research

Original post made on May 13, 2011

Two sixth-grade girls at Hart Middle School put zest into their assignment by teacher Terry Ludlow to undertake a community service project, raising more than $3,500 in just a couple of weeks for leukemia research. For one of the girls, 12-year-old Katie Crawford, the effort was on the personal side. Her mother Nancy, 52, was recently diagnosed with a mild form of leukemia. Although tests show no treatments are necessary now and she's likely to have many trouble-free years ahead, the news nevertheless shook the Crawfords' Laguna Oaks household.

Mr. Bing - Thanks for the great article entitled "Hart 6th-grade girls help leukemia research"! It was a great honor to work and encourage the girls, but I wasn't the teacher that gave the assignment. That honor goes to Mary Geasa, who has her Quest classes doing various community services. Kate Crawford and Gracie McKeag would come to me when road blocks came up, and I did help with suggestions, but it was Mary Geasa that got this ball rolling! Thanks Mary for showing how great our Hart students are!

My husband is Katie Crawford's godfather. We've known Nancy Crawford since she was in high school. Pleasanton is very fortunate to have this very responsible, very caring family as one of their residents. Thank you for publicizing Katie and Gracie's efforts to raise awareness for the need for more research for this terrible disease. You and they are truly Great Americans!
