Home to home solicitation

Yet another knock on my door after dark last night. I live alone and didn't open my door but have to open a curtain to see who is at the door. It was a young kid with a folder selling something who I told I wasn't interested through the glass. Isn't there something that can be done about the groups that load the kids in a van and bring them to our community. It was late and dark and he shouldn't have been out by himself. Plus what does it do for his self-esteem to be turned down or, as in my case, not even given the opportunity to explain what he was doing. I try to donate when I can and when I know the money will actually go to the particular cause but I don't ever contribute to this type of solicitation, unless, of course, it's a child from the neighborhood. What can we do when this happens? It's actually a little scary for someone like myself.
