Cooper's Hawk nesting near Fairlands Elementary!

Original post made by holly blash, Another Pleasanton neighborhood, on Apr 17, 2008

I have observed over the last 2 weeks, a Cooper's Hawk living and hunting in the tall trees in front of Fairlands Park and Elementary. It is now apparent that it is nesting (a rarely observed by human eyes event)in one of the tallest hardwoods just across from the school parking lot.
I thought that for the birders out there, this would be a wonderful observation. And for the town a wonderful event.

Do you think anyone at the school is aware of the nest. This could be a wonderful opportunity for students(science/nature classes)to observe nature at it's finest. Chances are most elementary students haven't witnessed an event such as this and have no idea what's required of the parent birds to keep hungry baby hawks happy. :)

Just a thought....

I have (twice) seen a very large bird that appeared to be a vulture on a lawn on Fairlands Dr. and also across from Kinder Care on Fairlands and Brockton. I have also seen a small flock of turkeys gathered outside of Graham-Hitch Mortuary, pecking at their reflection in the front door. That was just after Thanksgiving and my kids and I had a good laugh, imagining them pleading for their old friend "Tom"!!
