After seeing your story on the local Christmas lights ("Lighting up the night sky," Cover Story, Dec. 21, page 14), I'm wondering if next year the lighters would consider the environmental effects of their decorations.
I shudder to think of Pleasanton's collective December carbon footprint. The ancients lit a yule log and burned candles to anticipate the "return of the sun" at the winter solstice.
Let us decorate thoughtfully, whether we're commemorating Jesus' birth in the dark in a stable or any of our winter holidays.
