Leading Democrats in the Congress have called for support of new legislation sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) S.1776: The Holiday Simplification and Fairness Act of 2013.
The legislation officially changes the name of Independence Day to the 4th of July. President Barack Obama, on vacation in his African ancestral homeland, characterized the legislation as "an important step forward". Rep Keith Ellison (D-MN) called upon the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Democrats who are also members of the Communist Party, to support the legislation. "With single payer health care, repeal of the 2nd Amendment, and a number of other important issues facing the next Congress, ridding America of the notion that we are celebrating independence is critical at this important juncture in history".
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stated in her weekly press briefing, "The American people need the government. They need more support and assistance in their day-to-day lives. No one disputes this fact. Whether we are talking about an infant who needs formula, or a part-time college student who needs beer & ramen noodles, or even a senior who simply needs euthanasia services, the American people should be given all of the government they can take.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo declared her support for a further initiative to rename the largest city in America named Independence, in her home state of Missouri to Dependence. "By simply removing the first two letters of the name of the city, we will achieve savings for main street. Smaller signs and fewer letters in the name is just commonsense reform which will make the lives of Missourians easierer."
