YMCA forum deals with Livermore sex abuse arrest

When parents of boys coached by Andrew Michael Nisbet heard he had been arrested and charged with sexually abusing young male golf students, they reacted with shock and fear. If crimes were indeed committed, it might be years before the extent of the abuse or number of victims is known, if ever. Nisbet, 31, of Livermore was charged Dec. 7 with 65 felony counts for allegedly sexually abusing two boys whom he'd taught.

I am grateful that many of his victims have come forward. Thank you. I strongly encourage all victims to speak with their parents and tell them what happened.

There are thousands and thousands of adults who prey upon the innocence of children. All children have a right to remain safe.

It's my hope that Mr. Nisbet will be incarcerated for life with no possibility of parole. All children and their families have a right to be safe and free of criminal sexual abuse by adults.

Thank you for coming forward. May your healing begin. I am so sad that this happened to you and your family.

Awareness and open discussion of this is essential in the hiring and monitoring of employees.

The hiring process must include the acknowledgement that such positions are unfortunately attractive to predators, a strong admonition against such behavior, and a clear message that staff and parents will be actively looking for suspicious behavior.

As with other areas of employment in which trust is of critical importance to the business, employees in jobs that involve close contact with kids must avoid even the appearance of wrongdoing.

To this end, the position must include a clearly written set of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors provided to both the employee and parents, including the provisions that the employee must never be alone with a child in any place not fully visible to others and that the employee must never contact a child outside of the place of employment.

Very well said Mike. I assure you, this will be the new norm at places that hire people to work with kids.
