The problem with the Chabot-Las Positas District is simple: cronyism. Over the past five years, one qualified leader after another has been chased off for refusing to play the "good ol boys" game.
All you have to do is look at what happened to Chancellor Joel Kinnamon. He did not recommend the "chosen one" that the Board wanted to be president at Chabot. The Board overruled Kinnamon and hired their inside candidate even though the candidate did not meet the minimum qualifications.
Pretty soon, Kinnamon was told he needed to go and other administrators were right behind him. Kinnamon sued. After spending about $250,000 to fight the lawsuit, the district settled. Kinnamon got a better job and a $300,000 check from the Board. You can find this by looking at page 3 of the minutes from the April meeting at Web Link.
Look at the hiring since Kinnamon left. It's like a friends and family plan. The solution is very simple. It's time for a new Board.

How 'bout a wild idea.
Consider hiring someone with a business degree and who has achieved success in the private sector. This might increase the success potential of the community college. Higher education institutions place far too much emphasis on "ed admin" degrees than on hiring people with business backgrounds who have demonstrated success in a variety of organizations, not just educational institutions.
