Pleasanton Police detectives have the identities of three teens who were there when a local man was attacked over the weekend and left unconscious on the street.

They also have the identity of an 18-year-old “person of interest” from outside the area.

For now, police are not releasing the names of the three witnesses, described by police as cooperative.

“The Pleasanton teens are considered witnesses only at this time,” Police Sgt. Maria Munayer stated.

“We do not intend to make an immediate arrest or disclose the identities of the involved subjects as the investigation is currently ongoing,” she added. “We have no reason to believe there were any additional people present or involved in the incident.”

Police called the attack on David Lamont, 51, outside his home on Middleton Place “an isolated incident.”

“Although Mr. Lamont remains in critical condition in a local hospital, detectives are hopeful they will be able to speak with him in the future to determine his recollection of the incident,” Munayer said.

Lamont remains in a coma as of this afternoon.

The attack occurred outside his home on a cul-de-sac where neighbors said teens occasionally park at night.

“Officers learned the resident had come out of his house to confront some juveniles who were making some noise,” Munayer said.

Asked about potential charges for those involved, she said, “until we can piece together what actually happened, it’s too soon to say.”

Neighbor Carolyn DeFeo said she’d been told by Lamont’s wife that a group of boys and girls were outside the family’s home when he was attacked.

“There was an argument,” DeFeo said. “He was knuckle punched or sucker punched.”

She said Lamont fell over, and that “the kids panicked and left our neighbor on the side of the road. He was unconscious.”

DeFeo said he suffered from a fractured skull and had teeth knocked out.

“He’s in bad shape and we’re hoping he will stabilize and get better,” she said.

Another neighbor, who asked not to be identified, was just arriving home around the time of the attack.

“I saw a copper-colored or golden car coming down the street,” the young man said. “At the time, I didn’t think too much about it.”

He added that the vehicle he saw was an SUV and that he saw the silhouette of the driver and movement in it as well.

Ten to 15 minutes later, he said, “I saw a fire truck followed by a police car, followed by another police car, followed by an ambulance.”

While police were at the scene, the neighbor said he also saw a black Mercedes SUV go partway up the street, then turn around and leave.

“It made a U-turn halfway up the street,” he said.

Middleton Place is one of several cul-de-sacs off Hopkins Way in the undeveloped hills southeast of Mission Hills Park near Sunol Boulevard.

Neighbors said teens use the dead end as a place to gather, especially since an unfinished road nearby has been blocked off to cars. The cul-de-sac also has access to the ridge and fields that run behind the Lamont’s home.

“It’s stupid, how easily it could have been avoided, how it escalated. It was so unnecessary,” said a neighbor. “All they had to do was get in the car and leave.”

Lamont is the father of two teenagers, one in college and one a freshman at Foothill High School.

His wife, Agnes Lamont, and the couple’s two teenage daughters have stayed by his side at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, praying he will come out of his coma.

Agnes, in a statement to the Pleasanton Weekly early Wednesday, said the community is rallying around her and her family. She thanked “both friends and previous strangers,” and asked for prayers for her husband.

“Our community has brought on miracles before and we need one now,” Agnes Lamont said.

“Hopefully parents take stock and embrace a culture of respect, compassion, integrity and responsibility, rather than paying them lip service as slogans on our school walls,” she said. “It’s our jobs, as parents, to provide a moral compass to our children, and keep them within 50 feet after 11 p.m.”

Police said they’d received help from community members, but are continuing to ask anyone with additional information to come forward.

The school district has an anonymous tip line, 417-5199, that does not track numbers and that accepts both voice and text messages. Those with information may also call the Pleasanton Police Department at 931-5100.

  1. I just wanted to take a moment to say that I wish the Lamont family strength and for Mr. Lamont to make a speedy and full recovery. Your family is in the thoughts and prayers of this local family. And I wish courage upon the youths involved to do the right thing and take full ownership of their actions.

  2. This is the kind of event that is traumatic for everybody. It stirs up enormous anger, anxiety, great sadness. May Mr. Lamond eventually feel better and know that many good people desire his recovery.

    So tragic and so unnecessary…

I remain hopeful that the guilty parties and all of those that were present be identified publicly and be punished.

  3. Cholo..nice to have your input to be positive and uplifting here…lets all pray for this family and pray he comes too…senseless..praying for his wife and chilren.

  4. The human body has an enormous capacity to recover, heal, and ultimately thrive again – may the force be with Mr Lamont, his physicians, and his family. Amen.

  5. Why is it taking so long to make an arrest? The police are being too soft on these teens who are accessories after the fact if they don’t help the investigation. They are criminals. Please treat them as such and close this case. Even if they didn’t throw a punch, how did they not stop it when it happened, or call for help after immediately after it happened, or stand up and tell the police everything now? Were they raised by wolves? Or are they just entitled rich spoiled brats who think mommy and daddy will protect them? A man lies in a coma. This is not just teen hijinks. Please throw the book at them.
    Godspeed to the Lamont family.

  6. I’m so very sorry for what this family has been put through. I will pray for the Lamont family and do believe in miracles. I have two daughters as well that are similar ages and I just can’t imagine what their Lamont sisters are going through living such a nightmare. I hope the family will continue to communicate through the PW and please let this community know what we can do to help. There are so many of us that would like to do something/anything that might be of any assistance at all. Please know we are here for you.

I do appreciate the previous comments about being hopeful that the teens involved will show the courage to own up to what has happened. In my humble opinion, the only thing worse for the Lamont family would be having to deal with years of legal proceedings over their loved one being savagely beaten.

I too wish the police were making immediate arrests and want to be upset that they have not. But then I remind myself of how they handled the Cody Hall situation and even though it was not immediate, the system worked and I pray this is the case here, but with these teens stepping up as previously posters have so eloquently stated.

Please stay strong Lamont family. And PLEASE be sure to let your community know what we can do for you. Any little thing at all. We are here for you. With much love.

  7. To ALL trash parents with trash kids:

Understand this, if you have trash kids, I will not care if your kid has ADHD, I will not care if your kid has dyslexia, I will not care if your kid is a druggie or a lush, I also will not care if your kid is a straight A student or star football player, keep the product of your trash parenting away fom me, my home and my family! Trust me when I say this, trash parents and trash kids are better off never running into the likes of me. I will and implore others to do the same, have zero tolerance for trash to enter our community. YOU ARE NOT WELCOME IN PLEASANTON. Hang the thugs!!! We need to unite and make a statement of ZERO tolerance.

  8. I believe the PD has likely not made arrests yet because they have not completed the investigation. An investigation like this is very complex and time consuming. If they rush it and make an arrest but leave out a small detail, that can lead to a case being dismissed and no criminal charges against a suspect. I’ll bet the PD wants to make an arrest just as bad as the general public does but a thorough investigation is key. Just because the juveniles were there, does not automatically mean they can be charged. Look up the legal definition of an “accessory”, its going to require a bit more than what was published here to develop criminal cases. Contrary to popular belief from TV shows, if they were witnesses and did not intervene or call the police, it is not automatically a violation of a criminal statute.

  9. I think the angst of no arrests being made is due to Mr. Wohltmann’s sensationalistic reporting and usage of words that imply something contrary to the “legal” definition. You see, he states, police know three who were “involved” in the incident, and that the police are only treating them as witnesses. Translation = some kids who didn’t do it have come forward to tell who did it. Since the kids who did it are obviously violent and likely on drugs – police have tried to reassure the witnesses to do the right thing and come forward. The police aren’t going to say what’s really going on to Mr. Wohltmann because his overzealous reporting could threaten their investigation. And they shouldn’t.

Unfortunately, this is what the sense of entitlement has done to the youth of today. Whether they are young African American teens playing the “knockout” game against innocent whites, or young rich white druggies whose parents enable their antisocial and violent behavior. Now’s the time to stay armed, these kids who are trying to be tough are going to be taught a life-ending lesson if they mess with the wrong man.

    Prayers for Mr. Lamount.

  10. Mr.Wohltmann’s ‘sensationalistic reporting’ was straight out of the PPD press release.

I am with FHS Mom on this one. Prayers for the family.

  11. Dear Cholo, I was very surprised to hear something so warm and positive come from you. Your normal posted comments are anything but pleasant. Maybe you are starting to realize that being nice is much better than throwing rocks.

Well my thoughts we quickly changed when I noticed the Express deleted two of your comments…They deemed them inappropriate to be published.

Thanks for listening, Julia Pardini from Alamo

PS…Maybe the first Cholo was a wannabe Cholo and not the real Cholo

The article states “Pleasanton Police detectives have the identities of three teens WHO WERE THERE when a local man was attacked over the weekend and left unconscious on the street.” From this article we can’t determine exactly what their role was. Maybe they were directly involved in the assault or maybe not. In either case, since Mr. Lamont was found unconscious and alone by his wife with the teens all having fled the scene, it doesn’t appear that any of the teens behaved in an exemplary manner on that night.

  13. AC….what you fail to realize is everyone is treated as a witness until a crime can be proven in a court of law…may I suggest you attend a Citizens Academy at the PD so you can deepen your obviously shallow knowledge pool.
