It's not enough! Tickets should be issued to cops who are on cell phones when driving too!

Simple solution. If you are involved in an accident your cell records are checked at the scene. If you were using the phone your insurance company can force YOU to pay for all damages to both parties, including medical and other settlements. Make cell users financially responsible for all costs associated with the accident, including emergency responders.
Time to get these entitles morons off their phones or out of their cars.

I am surprised it is only 5900. It seems like 1 out of 3 drivers I see are on the phone any time I look.

It seems like cell phoning and texting is an addiction. What can be so important that can't wait until the car is stopped?

Some people would probably go for the idea of having their phones surgically attached to their ears.

I wholeheartedly agree with Jim's comments. Addiction is a good word to use. As a driver on city streets, you have to be careful of these idiots, who walk off the sidewalk, or coming from the store in parking lots, with their head bowed low, while texting.

Cindy, police officers are immune to the law during the course of their duties.

I've got no reason to use my phone in the car because the only people I've got anything to say to while I'm driving are usually right in front of me.

Let's double that, no triple it. No get everyone off the road that uses cell phones while driving. It is dangerous and as deadly as drunk driving.

how about eating and driving? I almost got hit by a moron today that swerved into my lane on Hopyard because she was eating a cup of ice cream using a spoon. In the 45 MPH area, middle lane, going 30 MPH and swerving into both the lanes on either side of her. MORON.
